About this deal

Unlike a lot of other inexpensive TVs, the Toshiba UL21 (50UL2163DBC) looks much more premium than it actually is with a slim, sleek and glossy build. It’s not perfect, though. You can’t expect to be blown away by the picture quality like you would be from the best TVs on the market, but considering the price, it does go beyond expectations. TRU Micro Dimming facilitates dynamic control over the TV’s contrast, TRU Flow smooths motion and reduces judder, while TRU Resolution upscales non-4K content to improve picture quality. Along with Dolby Vision, the UL21 is a TV that benefits from the help of Dolby Atmos, an audio feature designed to offer a more immersive and three-dimensional listening experience.

TRU Micro Dimming and TRU resolution are both on board, as is support for the HLG and HDR10 formats. In terms of audio, the WK3C supports Dolby Audio (but not Atmos) and virtual surround sound format DTS Virtual:X. The new range features a few more advanced features on some models (Dolby Atmos, eARC), with Dolby Vision present as Toshiba looks to cement its position as the value-choice in the market. Colour accuracy is not as impressive when viewing HDR either, particularly when colours become more saturated. Blues are reproduced rather well but intense greens, reds and cyan have a tendency to look unnatural. Whites also suffer from clipping in bright scenes. While viewing a popular test image of mountains and moving clouds, the clouds looked undefined and it was a similar story in darker scenes, with the UL21 unable to articulate fine details with clarity. PEDESTAL STAND FOR TOSHIBA 32LL3C63DB 2103

If overheating continues to be an issue, consider moving the TV to a well-ventilated area or away from heat sources. Replace T-Con Board:

Dynamic mode is much closer to Natural in colour, but with even more pumped-up blues, cooler-toned pinks and sharper details, which I think would work best for when you want to give daytime TV a slight boost. Though, I personally prefer the way in which the slight warmth of Natural brings more life to characters.Dolby Vision HDR delivers vibrant colours in every frame. Every picture looks more realistic, and dimly lit scenes look clear and rich with detail. In Game mode, latency was measured at 25.7ms. Even with Game mode off, the set measured 25.8ms, so there doesn’t appear to be much difference with it on or off. You’ll have to manually switch Game mode on; the U29 doesn’t auto-switch. Toshiba U29 performance – Much improved over the UL5, with a solid performance at this price Picture modes are a choice of Dynamic, Game, Sports, Cinema, Natural and User, plus their respective HDR versions. Natural seems best suited to the job, with a colourful but refined presentation. Dynamic Contrast and Noise Reduction should be set to medium, with the colour temp at normal for HD content. For audio devices you should use the Audio Link option via the following menu options on the TV: System > Sound Menu. For remote controllers, use the following: System > Options > More > Smart Remote. Select the menu option on your remote, and press ‘OK’ to open the related menu. For HDR content, it seems best to set Dynamic Contrast to low; medium and high settings make colours too dark and leech detail out of the whites. Switch Noise Reduction off for 4K – and, whatever you do, turn off Energy Saving since it results in a dreary looking image.

I remember struggling to wrangle a decent picture out of the UL5. The Toshiba 58U2963DB’s picture quality out of the box is much better and offers a pretty solid foundation, with a few additional tweaks. Chat Widget offers out-of-the-box cookie consent management, see here: Enabling cookie consent for the Chat widget & Web SDK There are five picture modes to choose from when streaming non-Dolby supported content – Natural, Cinema, Game, Sports and Dynamic. The cable that connects your TV to your cable box or other devices is a crucial component of the picture quality. The final difference of note relates to the TV’s stand. Where the UK31 comes with a central platform on which it stands, the UA2B has feet that attach to either side of the panel. This might make it more difficult to mount on some AV furniture. Featuring down-firing speakers with Dolby Audio and Dolby Atmos support, the Toshiba UL21 (50UL2163DBC) does deliver on sound quality. When I was using the TV I rarely needed to put the volume above about 20% so it easily filled up the room.

The TV supports Dolby Audio, DTS HD and DTS TruSurround and it’s best to keep the Dolby smart Audio turned on. With it off, vocal clarity falls away, and the audio sounds squashed.Aimed at those looking for a second TV to go in the kitchen or bedroom, this set includes a ‘Screensaver’ mode where the TV displays calendar, weather reports and shopping list details when the screen is in standby.
