About this deal

In my experience, kit lenses can feel a bit sluggish when acquiring focus. If you’re shooting subjects in motion, such as sports, wildlife, pets, or even hyperactive kids, this can be a serious concern.

In the range of 18-55mm, VR doesn't do anything unless you take the camera off its green AUTO setting or turn off the flash to get longer shutter speeds in dim light. If you always use a tripod you don't need VR. In these cases, forget this VR lens and get the otherwise identical non-VR 18-55mm to save money. Take note though that other lenses will be different from this and will not have a “variable aperture phenomenon.” So, you will have to take this thing into account as long as you are using a kit lens to take photos. While the 18-55mm is not considered wide, the 18mm offers a moderately wide-angle glass, excellent for landscapes and architecture. The 55mm range is more relevant for portraits, passport photos, and when one wants to capture small details like macro photography. Usually, the trajectory of lenses after the kit lens starts with a 50 mm prime lens. It is definitely better than a kit lens, and it is also affordable.Compared to other lenses, these ones are made of less expensive material. They weigh around 12 pounds, adding a little weight to your DSLR. They are easily portable, making them suitable if you don’t like carrying heavy cameras. With the AF-S DX Nikkor 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR II lens wide open, you can see some heavy light fall-off in the corners and along the frame edges. Stopping down helps, although to completely get rid of this phenomenon, you will need to use an f-stop of f/8 or smaller. There's also some very obvious barrel distortion at 18mm and mild pincushioning at 55mm, pretty much what you'd expect from an inexpensive kit zoom. If this crop is about 6" (15cm) wide on our screen, then the complete image printed at this same extreme magnification would be about 40 x 60" (1 x 1.5 meters). In this case, you're seeing the texture of the silver paint on the watch face. Besides older-model Sigma or Tamron lenses, compact, variable-aperture wide to short-tele zooms do not have much competition apart from the "standard-issue" 18-55mm kit lenses from the camera manufacturers themselves.

If you don't use in-camera correction, it has strong barrel distortion at 18mm, moderate distortion at 24mm and none from 35 to 55mm. I could go blind trying to see any real differences. Any apparent differences turn out to be variations in focus. The number of cameras compatible with both lenses is limited. Even for compatible cameras, firmware update may be required*. Nikon D3300, Nikon 18-55mm AF-P at 18mm, f/3.5 hand-held at 1/4 at Auto ISO 720, Perfectly Clear. bigger or full-resolution file to explore on your computer (mobile devices rarely display high resolution files properly). The numbers in mm on them indicate their focal length. Prime lenses usually have a single focal length, while zoom lenses have numerous focal lengths. That said, kit lenses can still produce great images within their limitations. If you plan to work in bright light or use a tripod, you’ll have no trouble capturing stunning shots. Additionally, understanding the characteristics of your lens and making the most of its capabilities is key. Learning to adapt your shooting techniques and leveraging the available light will help you overcome the challenges posed by narrow maximum apertures. 5 kit lens photography tips Higher-level cameras do sometimes include the option to bundle in a lens for a discount, but these products are usually much more expensive and don’t have the basic kit-lens characteristics.) Reasons to use a kit lens for your photography I live by VR because my best shots are hand-held in fading light. VR is a huge benefit when shooting hand-held at slow shutter speeds from about 1/4 to 1/30 of a second. If you like to shoot interiors and night without a tripod as I do, this lens is for you unless you already have the Nikon 18-200mm VR.
