About this deal

As well as being packed with practical information on using 50 native plants, Hedgerow Medicine also gives a fascinating insight into the literary, historic and worldwide application of these herbal remedies. Her photographs have been widely published in books and magazines, including National Geographic, and she has worked as a wildlife illustrator and artist for many years, holding a number of exhibitions. Among the recipes featured are: bilberry glycerite, chickweed bath vinegar, comfrey ointment, hawthorn tincture, horseradish cough syrup, horsetail cystitis tea blend, meadowsweet ghee, mugwort punch, oak tooth powder, ramsons pesto, self-heal flower essence and sorrel zhug.

So we have fully integrated text and Julie’s photographs, with emphasis on correct plant identification. Chickweed, for example, which I always pull up and toss aside to be throw away or given to my guinea pigs, will proudly be dried and bottled by me this year to aid weight loss and help me soothe the itchy skin I get during summer. Ranging from high blood pressure in my dad, anaemia, irregular menstrual cycles and infections (and much more). The creamy billows of meadowsweet’s flowers have been used for mead, wine, beer and syrups, and still make a good choice. The first was a vegetarian cookbook, Vegetarian Masterpieces, written with Carol Tracy and published in 1989. She has lived in several countries, and is the daughter of renowned wildlife film-makers Des and Jen Bartlett, with whom she won an Emmy in 1993 for Survivors of the Skeleton Coast. I don’t often say this about the books I review, but this book is without question one you simply must have! Matthew Seal has had a liflelong love of wildflowers, and, like Julie, is a member of the Association of Foragers.

I was suitably alarmed and now have been able to amaze my specialist with rapid recovery and have changed my meds to a much safer and smaller type and dose due to my change in diet and herbal supplements. A selection from and commentary on the biggest and, in the authors’ opinion, the best herbal ever written in English, John Parkinson’s magnum opus, Theatrum Botanicum or Theater of Plants (1640).The art of natural perfumery (a weekend course introducing the less well known essential oil used in perfumery, how to blend and make perfumes). Julie is one of the founding organisers of HerbFest, an annual gathering celebrating healing plants and herbal medicine. I’ve used this book more times than I can count and the herbs have been amazing at treating all kinds of ailments!

This book has been described as ‘a loving collection of ingredients and recipes for creating tried and true aphrodisiacs at home’.

I don't say this too often about the books, I review, but this book is without quesiton one you simply must have. Before you know it you ll be strolling book in hand along autumn hedgerows picking remedies that will see you through what the winter has to throw at you.
