A new book is out today that tells the harrowing story of one young girl's survival through the Holocaust. Tova Friedman for reliving the suffering that she experienced to share her story with us, so that we will never forget.
A tiny girl is born into a world where she knows that children like her aren't supposed to survive, that everyone she knows will die. However, about 20% of the way through the book I was so depressed after page after page of dire, horrendous deprivation, starvation and persecution that I thought seriously of not finishing the book. The author notes that many people view antisemitism as a problem of the past, an issue that is rare and isolated in 21st-century America.He was convicted and sentenced (on 15 [19] or 17 March 1924 [20]) to ten years in prison, while Bormann received a one-year sentence. In an interview at Nuremberg after the war, Höss commented that, after observing the prisoners die by Zyklon B, " .
The sentence was carried out on 16 April next to the crematorium of the former Auschwitz I concentration camp. As a survivor of the Holocaust, Tova recounts her experience of being rounded up and living in the Jewish ghetto, being sent to a work camp with her parents and ultimately being a prisoner at Auschwitz. She was actually in the gas chamber near the end of the war, when the Nazis decided there was some mixup and they weren't supposed to gas this particular group of women and girls. And what we have tried to do is to take the reader and immerse them into Tova's story, so that they feel as though that they were walking in her shoes.
Because the number of people exceeded the capacity of the gas chambers and crematoria, mass pit executions were established.She was only 4 years old when she was sent to the first camp with her parents after the Jewish ghetto they lived in in Poland was liquidated. In the last days of the war, Himmler advised Höss to disguise himself as a member of the Kriegsmarine.
These experiences are so beyond what I can comprehend, reading her story, her words as she describes what life was like for her. Günther Maria Halmer took on the role of Höss in the 1988-89 American television miniseries War and Remembrance. The killing was easy; you didn't even need guards to drive them into the chambers; they just went in expecting to take showers and, instead of water, we turned on poison gas. Brigitte’s nephew, Rainer Höss, son of Hans Jürgen, is the one family member who has asked questions about the past. Hitler’s plan, in addition to dominating the world under his authoritarian rule, included identifying, dehumanizing, exploiting, and murdering every Jew, that he derisively referred to as untermenchen, translated into German as ‘subhuman.
She chronicles her story of survival, under the direst of circumstances, beginning with the Nazi invasion of Poland until her liberation from Auschwitz. She didn’t want anyone to find her mother’s remains — least of all neo-Nazis who might pay homage — so she gave a modified version of her mother’s name to the cemetery administrator.
