About this deal

The big Metcon M on the heel looks good. The heel clip at the bottom (shiny) is tough TPU plastic with a minimal edge – for low drag on HSPUs.

The hyperlift goes under the midsole – and when it’s in place it gives you more heel raise. Great for squats, thrusters, and pistols. But thankfully these were followed by some subtler designs, and also a custom design should you choose to pay a slight premium. If you’re a harsh heel striker, the firm heel is far from ideal, but the sole does offer some cushioning, the shoe stays put on the foot, and I managed to get in some speedy sprints in them, both on a treadmill and outdoors. To draw a comparison I just prefer the feel on the foot from the higher heel cup and tongue of the Nano X, and prefer Reebok’s classic design and more subtle sole rope wrap. The upper is a dual layer mesh, more visible in colorways with contrasting uppers, but this remains thin and super breathable. The Reebok Nano X uses the same split-outsole that was on the Reebok Nano 9. Flat, all-rubber, and tons of grip. The Nike Metcon 6 also carries forward the outsole from the 5. Both are good, but the Metcon 6 has more rope climbing potential – I think. These types of accessory exercises are super important for runners looking to improve their speeds or prevent injuries (which is everyone right?!) and the typical running shoe just doesn’t cut it. The fit was true to size- I went ½ size smaller than my Nike running shoes and the width and length felt perfect. The only reason it didn’t get a full 10/10 was its performance during a run, even a short one, as part of a workout or warm-up. The Metcon 5 felt heavy and stiff when it came to moving through the running gait. The aim was to guide runners who are working out in a gym environment or doing any strength training to choose the right shoe for their exercise programs.

The biggest change has come in the form of a much superior and breathable upper, made with large ventilation holes to increase airflow and also give a much lighter feel on the foot. You might feel the narrowness of the Nike Metcon shoes after a long day – that’s where it bothered me the most (a long day walking or on your feet can leave your feet slightly swelled. Nike also delivers a splash of color onto the Metcon 6s. I actually loved the muted, two-tone look of last year’s Metcons; something about them felt perfectly no-nonsense, perfect for a serious, focused workout.

What’s different in the Nike Metcon 6 as compared to the Metcon 5? Not much. The upper is the real difference. I wear a Men’s Size 11 (US) in all my Nike running shoes, and in most shoes from Reebok, UA, Adidas, etc. In fact, the heel is so firm and dense, these shoes make a “clip-clop” sound when you walk – Just like Oly lifters! (But not nearly as loud).

The heel feels quite loose in the FlyEase version of the shoe – that’s the tradeoff for the ability to put them on and take them off without using your hands. Overall both are great shoes for lifting weights. Neither is really great for running, but the Nike (like the 5 before it) feels to have a bit more cushion in the forefoot, thanks to that dual-density midsole. The removable midsole of the shoe (that’s the part between the outsole and your foot – is made from 2 kinds of foam. The forefoot of the midsole is a much more cushioned foam – and that’s great for sprints, jump rope, box jumps, and more. FlyEase works exactly as described by Nike, just consider whether you really need this capability – because you are going to sacrifice a little bit of secure fit for it. On a par with the Nano X here for sure, with a slightly lighter feel. WEIGHTLIFTING with the Nike Metcon 6 (Squats and Deadlifts) When we reviewed the Metcon 5 we loved the stability underfoot (especially when lifting weights) comfortable, wide fit, durability and general aesthetics of the shoe.
