However, at the louder levels, the low frequencies do begin to dwindle. MiniRig 3 Review: Pros and Cons

Minirig - Portable Bluetooth Speakers Bristol UK

The idea is that, because the Minirig relies on the volume control of your device to control the output volume of the speaker, having two inputs that support a large range of output volumes ensures it offers the best quality, whatever device you use. A well-made chassis combined with high-quality materials and fantastic drop protection makes these speakers stronger than your average tech. You can also expect some water resistance, although we wouldn’t recommend submerging these speakers in too much liquid. T MiniRig is one of the best-known brands on the market for customers in search of a compact, powerful speaker tech. There’s also an app for Android and iPhone that enables you to play and pause your media, pair up Minirigs, switch between stereo and mono modes and even turn them off remotely. It’s a great little addition to the whole setup. Although Bluetooth is available on these speakers, getting everything set up and working properly can be a real headache. There may be issues with lag and dropped connections to consider. Connectivity Credit: Minirigs

Minirig Mini review | What Hi-Fi?

If you need a good level of medium high volume, this will significantly reduce the battery performance. While we intend to look at a full Minirigs 2.1 portable Hifi system later, this review will concentrate on a single Minirig Bluetooth speaker. We will take a look at its design and how it performed under our various tests and comparisons. Audiophile On doesn't usually cover Bluetooth Speakers. But, all that said, if you care about sound and portability first and foremost, the Minirig Mini is an excellent travel speaker. What makes the Mini difficult to recommend, however, is that some (admittedly larger but still very portable) rivals have both significantly better audio quality and greater versatility. To put it simply, the Minirigs Mini is the best-sounding Bluetooth speaker for traveling/portable use. The original Minirig still sounds the best, but honestly, the Mini is not far off it at all. Today, this device is much more powerful than the previous MiniRig, with a custom 70 mm driver that really delivers sensational power. There’s also the added bonus of the wireless linking function, so you can run multiple MiniRig speakers at the same time. That said, an individual Minirig, used on its own, is a mono speaker. This is as opposed to a stereo unit that other small portable units aspire to be. This is important because, by making a single unit mono only, Minirigs can fit a larger 3-inch speaker into this device. Other companies try to cram multiple speakers of inferior quality into their units. Here, the 3-inch diaphragm can move more air and produce a way better sound and a much fuller and deeper bass response.

Available for both Android and Apple devices, the app gives you a 5-band equalizer that you can experiment with. There’s also more control over your music through the app. One slight downside is that the more you ramp up the volume, the more likely it is that you’ll lose out on things like bass clarity. However, the provided cable does allow you to use the Minirig’s battery to charge your mobile devices. There’s enough juice onboard to fully charge an iPhone 6 Plus once or an iPhone 4S twice. For the rest of this review, as mentioned, we will be talking about the use of 1 single Minirig speaker being used on its own, without being daisy-chained to other units. Essentially we want to look at how the Minirigs perform as a stand-alone portable travel speaker.

More than just a handful

Clearly the long and thin stereo approach is more desirable for enhancing the audio when watching video on a laptop or any other occasion where you’ll be sat directly in front of the speaker/s but for just blasting out music while camping, gardening, cooking, partying in your hotel room, a single loudspeaker does the job just fine. This little device can deliver some sensational power, with 40w of RMS to ensure you fill a whole room in seconds. Some of those upper-midrange notes are also harsher than we would like. They have an unnaturally coarse cutting edge to them, which leaves you recoiling a little at each draw of the violin’s bow. This is only exacerbated at higher volumes. Hooking together 2 Minirigs and the subunit makes a stand-alone 2.1 sound system that remains portable enough to take with you to parties and camping trips. It is an incredibly versatile, well-thought-out system and one that we think has been grossly overlooked by the audio community thus far.
