About this deal

The introductory essays provided good background material as well, although it would have been nice to hear more of Haeckel's own voice. Indeed, until I was forced to sell it (a good offer was made and, after all I am a bookseller, I can't hang on to my favourite items forever and I managed a year with this one) it was hidden on my private shelf where I could look at it almost every day. Drawings are lumped into classes on single pages, so you'll get for example: one page of various starfishes, but without identification of each one. The Kunstformen contains 100 beautiful lithographic plates which show a multitude of unusual life forms: Radiolaria, Foraminifera, and other forms of microscopic life; jellyfishes, starfishes, calcareous sponges, star corals, barnacles, and other sea life; mosses, lichens, red algae, ferns, fungi, orchids, and other plants; and turtles, moths, spiders, bats, frogs, lizards, hummingbirds, and antelope.

Haeckel recognized beauty in every aspect of nature, even the ones who could be perceived as scary or insignificant. The published artwork of Haeckel includes over 100 detailed, multi-colour illustrations of animals and sea creatures (see: Kunstformen der Natur, "Art Forms of Nature").To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Originally published in Germany as Kunstformen der Natur, it is long out of copyright and available online in various formats.

Cnidaria also feature prominently throughout the book, including sea anemones as well as Siphonophorae, Semaeostomeae, and other medusae.According to Haeckel scholar Olaf Breidbach, the work was "not just a book of illustrations but also the summation of his view of the world. The Canvas and the Camera in Weimar Germany: A New Objectivity in Painting and Photography of the 1920s. I had no idea so many images I’ve seen in other books or as posters or even in my own curriculum came from Haeckel! The line drawing illustrations are really beautiful and a great source of inspiration for Lino printing.
