About this deal

People forget how utterly beat the South was (in large part due to the strategies of Sherman) and how this made many people realize how utterly bankrupt the cause was. Bulky books like this turn off reluctant readers and affirm the prejudice that reading is difficult, boring, and reserved for the elite.

A grant administrator from The Pacific Pioneer Fund explained that, while he considered BookWars to be a worthy and compelling project, he felt that the filmmaker “would have to be a genius to pull it off” (funding was denied). Among them: “Slick” Rick Sherman, a semi-professional magician; Al Mappo, so named because he only sells maps and atlases; Emil, who says only he "escaped”, though we do not know from where; and Pete Whitney: King of the booksellers, toad collector, and collage artist. The text is too heavy, with only two blocks of paragraphs per page, and is as thick as a dictionary. The narrator describes his post-graduation years in New York, and how he ended up at one point virtually penniless. I also strongly recommend William James’ essay “ Moral Equivalent of War” from 1906 which looks at some of those same urges and drives. This book tells the story of the turbulent decades when the book publishing industry collided with the great technological revolution of our time.

It was a lengthy read - almost 500 pages - but there is so much to look into and the author has done a brilliant job of using the in-depth analysis to peek behind the curtain, so to speak, into a world of books that has had to change over recent times and showing there is room for both forms thanks to the digital form making the old guard of print rethink and become more creative! This epic three-volume masterpiece is to war what Gibbon’s Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire was to history. When Italy dropped its alliance with Germany, Germany attacked the Italian troops in Greece and committed unbelievable atrocities on the local population. All sorts of wonderful tactical thoughts and stories of leadership and bravery are shown in their journey home.

Or was that all part of their strategy, aimed to intimidate enemies into submitting without a fight? On the other hand these same soldiers will frustrate you with their dysfunctional relationships and in some cases, generally poor choices. The Mongols turned war into a science — in fact, the first thing they did when they conquered new territory was find the scientists and scholars and deploy them as needed. Developing an author/publisher relationship with readers is a key factor, something not addressed by the “informational capital” data gatherers.

This disruption was not a single event; rather, it was a series of tumbling dominoes, created by technical innovation and resulting in cultural shifts in behavior. Still others, like Ron, rail against the futility of the city's efforts to stop New Yorkers from reading, because of their virtual addiction to books. Boyd, a master strategist and thinker, essentially reinvented our understanding of maneuver warfare. He was also perpetually riled up (some think he may have been bipolar) and loved going on the attack.

Thompson also shares with the reader statistical analyses of both public as well as private sales data from the industry. His book is every bit as harrowing as Sledge’s but also humorous, giving us a glimpse into the fraternity and life of ordinary soldiers struggling to pass the time in some of the worst places on earth. It is WWI — possibly one of the worst things Western Civilization has ever done to itself — as it actually was. While Thompson does get into more detail than I have ever seen covered in an academic or traditional-publishing-centric book, it could have also benefited from a deeper exploration of the vastness and richness that exists within the self-publishing community, and just how dominant indie authors are in the eBook space. It was written in secret on scraps of paper during landings and island battles of Peleliu and Okinawa. It’s considered a classic and read by most strategic thinkers across the armed forces today for a reason.
