About this deal

The E-PL7 features built-in Wifi which you can use to connect to a smartphone for picture sharing, GPS tagging and remote control. To use the Wifi you’ll need the Olympus Image Share app which is currently available for Android and iOS devices, I tested it with my iPhone 4S. The EP7 is the first ever camera released under this new ownership, although it's probably fair to assume that it was mostly developed by Olympus rather than OM Digital Solutions. The latest model adds several significant improvements over its predecessor, not least a revised shutter mechanism, a full control dial on the top plate and a 3:2 rear display. The shutter mechanism reduces the image shake that has blunted the appeal of previous models while the addition of a control dial should enhance the experience for users wanting to take control of the camera. The squarer display, meanwhile, is a better balance between the shape of the camera's stills and movie output - meaning more of the screen is used.

The IBIS is notably better than the GX9's and so is the JPEG engine, though Panasonic has come a long way from where they used to be. Manual exposure can be enabled for videos, although you do have to rotate the mode dial to the Movie position to take advantage of this. (You can start filming in practically any other shooting mode too, but in that case, videos will always be recorded with auto exposure.) If you must absolutely have an EVF then skip. Speed - We took a number of shots to test the camera's responsiveness, from switch on to first photo, shot to shot, focusing speed etc. We take a number of shots and then use the average to ensure accurate and consistent tests, making it easy to compare with other cameras. Shutter Response

Let’s see how the new camera compares against the previous Pen model, as well as the E-M10 mark IV, which is the most recent entry level model in the OM-D series. Great DOA camera. Seems Olympus marketing is detached from the market. Great if they can go the Fuji way but I believe they'll fail.Overall, the E-P7 may not have been the camera that everyone was expecting or hoping OM Digital Solutions would release first, but it's certainly an excellent addition to the existing range. We can't wait to see what they launch next... Each of these profiles is customisable and you can adjust the contrast using the Highlights & Shadow Control and/or the vignetting using the Shading Editor. It’s also possible to replicated the effect of using traditional colour filters with the monochrome profiles and adjust the saturation of up to 12 colours by up to +/-5 steps for the colour profiles. The coloured filter and saturation adjustments are made using a type of colour wheel control on the camera’s rear screen. With a sleeker, even more retro look, Olympus are clearly betting that would-be-buyers will be wowed by the E-P7's exterior appearance as well as the accompanying specification list when compared either with the E-M10 Mark IV or its main rivals from the likes of Fujifilm, Panasonic, Sony and Canon. There are 9 ISO settings available on the Olympus E-P7 which you can select at any time if the camera is in one of the creative shooting modes. Here are some 100% crops which show the noise levels for each ISO setting for both JPEG and RAW formats.

The PEN EP7 features a built-in pop-up flash and an external flash hotshoe, a tilting flip-down 3-inch LCD touchscreen, and an electronic shutter with a top shutter speed of 1/16,000 sec. Unlike the Art Filters and Picture Controls, the Color/Monochrome Profiles can’t be used with video, they’re just available for still images. However, it is possible to shoot raw and Jpeg files simultaneously so you can have the Jpeg with the effect and the raw without. While both Olympus and Panasonic share the same lens mount, they take different approaches to stabilisation. Panasonic requires lenses with built-in optical stabilisation, while Olympus builds stabilisation into the actual camera bodies. The benefit of the Olympus approach is enjoying stabilization with any lens you attach, whereas on a Panasonic body you’ll only have stabilization on lenses which support it. Panasonic does, however, equip most of its zooms with optical stabilization, including of course the common kit options. Like Panasonic, Samsung’s NX series offers stabilised lenses rather than building stabilisaton into its bodies. Inside the E-P7 is a 20.3Mp Four Thirds type sensor, which is paired with the TruePic VII processing engine. Olympus hasn’t commented on if or where that sensor has been used before, but it seems likely that it’s the same sensor that is in the OM-D E-M10 Mark IV.In Movie Mode the PEN E-PL7’s Live control menu allows you to change a range of settings independently of the same settings in stills shooting modes. These include the movie mode and quality settings, exposure and AF modes (including Face priority modes), processing options (Picture mode) ISO sensitivity, and audio recording. You can also set the movie stabilisation here. Action photographers will appreciate the fast burst rate of 8.7fps when using the mechanical shutter, complete with continuous auto-focusing and for an unlimited number of JPEGs and RAWs. Switch to the electronic shutter and the speed increases to 15fps, but the buffer decreases to 42 RAW and 49 JPG files. Olympus is generally regarded to have the best stabilisation system around and while the E-P7 doesn’t have quite as an impressive system as the company’s top-end cameras, it’s still claimed to offer a shutter speed compensation factor of 4.5EV for stills photography. This stabilisation system can also be used when shooting video to help iron out the shake and wobble of hand-held recording.
