Living in Mexico, many mealtimes involved a tequila or two, and the pair launched Casamigos together, with the goal of producing the perfect tequila to complement their food. Don Julio’s añejo is tasteful elegance when it comes to aged-in-oak tequila. The story of how Casamigos started is worth telling. Clooney and Gerber were sitting at a bar one night when building their new homes in Mexico, talking about how they were still yet to find their ‘perfect tequila’ despite trying so many. That night, they decided to create their own original tequila. In Mexico, tequila tends to be served chilled and immediately. Elsewhere in the world, it’s often served a little closer to room temperature for optimum aroma and taste benefits. If you’re new to the world of tequila, you’ll probably prefer it chilled for a more mild effect. Casamigos Reposado Tequila is aged for 7 months, and has a soft, slightly oaky with hints of caramel and cocoa taste. It has a silky texture with a medium to long smooth finish, and is in fact the only tequila (along with the other Casamigos tequilas) that George Clooney and friends say they serve in their homes in Mexico.

The brand was founded by George Clooney (yes, the actor George Clooney), Rande Gerber (a nightlife entrepreneur, known more as the significant other of supermodel Cindy Crawford) and property developer Michael Meldman. Originally meant for private consumption between the trio while their Cabo San Lucas (Mexico) vacation homes were being built, the trio tried different tequilas for some time until Clooney came up with the idea to make their own alcoholic drink.

Much like every tequila producer, Casamigos gets its blue weber agave piñas from the red clay soil and relatively cool climate of Jalisco (Mexico). While this affects the overall price of Casamigos tequila, the owners have managed to keep costs reasonable. They tried 700 recipes across 2 years, finally settling on their favourite. After buying over 1000 bottles in a year from the producers they were told that to continue they would have to get a licence. At this point, they decided to go out on a whim and take their tequila public with the help of Meldman who owned the development where Clooney and Gerber were building their houses. The development was called Casamigos, hence the name of the brand, translating roughly to ‘house of friends’. Vanilla, raisins and oak wood are present in the taste, but they do not try to be the lead in the Patron añejo theater. The telltale peppery rush of agave is still in the drink, and is very much the dominant flavor.

Again, what could steer rookie and veteran tequila drinkers towards Patron (instead of Casamigos) is Casamigos’ aforementioned lingering bitterness in the finish. In contrast, Patron goes down the throat smoothly, aided by hints of caramel and ever-so-slight white oak smokiness. Alongside Casamigos Blanco Tequila, the brand also produces it’s popular Casamigos Reposado and Casamigos Añejo Tequilas, along with other non-tequila spirits such as mezcal.One brief discussion turned into a longer chat, which turned into multiple talks over lunch, golf and dinner, before Clooney and Gerber decided to step things up a notch. And then, in 2013, Casamigos was born.
