About this deal

Granted, adding a coating to strings does add an extra stage (or more) to the manufacturing process and as a result, coated strings do cost more than standard uncoated strings. However, if you look at the bigger picture, coated strings often work out more economical in the long term…. Whilst Elixir do seem to reign supreme, there are some close competitors when it comes to popularity. As you can imagine D’Addario is still an innovative brand so it doesn’t come as a surprise that they are the most famous company that produces color-coded strings for acoustic, electric, classical, and bass guitars. Each color code marks a different string, and it’s unique to the company. So what does this mean for a guitar player? Well for starters it means our strings will last that much longer than normal. In fact, most manufacturers project that coated strings will last around 3 - 5 times longer than a standard uncoated string.

Of course, each manufacturer will argue that their way is the best. For instance, the brands that coat the wire first before winding say that this helps to maintain a more natural feel and Elixir say that their coating prevents the little ridges between the windings from getting clogged up. We've always found that they really pop with bright clarity and excellent solid midrange, and they work on pretty much every guitar style. Secondly, they feel great. Bending strings is a breeze, and they aren't overly noisy.I also want to mention that while D’Addario’s color-coded strings are meant to make the process of stringing a guitar more straightforward and easy, it’s also part of their sustainability campaign, to reduce waste. Fender String Colored Ball End Strings Even as an experienced guitarist I still find color-coded strings useful, especially when I’m short on time or if I need to string my guitar before a gig in a badly lit pub. Evidence of this is in Elixir’s most recent Optiweb electric sets. Over the years they have continued to thin out their coating and their latest electric offering is their ‘lightest coating yet’ and is described as having ‘the same crisp tone as an uncoated string’ and providing a ‘natural feel’. Like many shepherds in that area at that time, the D’Addario family made strings for various musical instruments primarily from sheep and hog intestines.

When it comes to D’addario nylon strings, most of them don’t have ball ends, but when they do the colored ball ends are marked completely differently like so: So, let’s take a look at what they have to offer and if they share any similarities or differences. D’Addario String Colored Ball End Strings If you’re a beginner, you’ll want to start off with a lighter gauge of electric guitar strings. The lighter the gauge of string, the less tension it produces - and that makes it much easier to play. We’d recommend a set of .009 to .042 gauge strings - as we feel that this is a great middle-ground to start on. You can go lighter, but the tone will be compromised - or you can go heavier, but playability will suffer. It’s actually for this very reason that some brands like DR’s Veritas strings insist on coating the central core of the wound strings too. At first you may think, what’s the point of doing this? The central core isn’t exposed to your fingers or the atmosphere?

There's another reason for trying out new strings too, different gauges can totally change the playability of your instrument and open up new playing techniques. A lighter set will make it easier to do huge bends, whereas a heavier set adds sustain and is better for down-tuning. Your strings are not only key to great sound, but can literally inspire you to play differently. The British string stalwart has been making strings since 1959 and now color-codes according to gauge as Roto Reds, Pinks, Yellows, and Purples, so no matter your guitar style, you'll find a set to match.

While D’Addario and Fender are the most well-known brands that produce color-coded strings, you can find other companies that do the same or something similar, like Cleartone, Rotosound, LaBella, and Dunlop. There are other considerations, however, like tuning stability and durability. No string is fully break-proof, but you should be looking for those with high tensile strength.
