About this deal

Another radiator bleed key type that I always have on my bunch of keys is a Tommy bar bleed key. It comes in handy for rear access bleed valves and getting in tight spaces when a standard type key is too big. Using my Tommy bar radiator bleed key in tight space Open both valves to allow water to fill from the mains system into the heating system. You should be able to hear water coming into the boiler.

This type of valve looks like a large nut with a screw in the centre. You can bleed the radiator by inserting a screwdriver into the slot and turning it to loosen it Key valve Insert your radiator key into the bleed screw in the bleed valve which will be at the top of your radiator. Make sure you have a cloth or rag ready to hold under the bleed valve to catch any drips. Sometimes when the bleed screw is broken off and you can’t remove it you might have to replace the radiator.

For more serious rounding a Mole type grip might get enough hold though it can make the rounding worse. Don't try that more than a couple of times Bleeding is different from draining a central heating system, which empties the water out, not just the air in the pipes.

Sometimes on old radiators, the bleed valve screw becomes worn and rounded and no matter how hard you try, you just can’t get the bleed key to grip the bleed screw enough to turn it.If, on the other hand, your radiator is hot at the top but cold at the bottom (or if it has cold patches), you could have a build-up of sludge. In that case, bleeding it might not fix the problem. More on that below. A typical radiator should bleed completely in no more than 20 to 30 seconds. This can change depending on the radiator’s size and the volume of trapped air. Continue to keep bleeding the radiator until water starts to flow from the bleed valve and the hissing sounds stops. This indicates that you have completely drained the radiator of the air. How can I tell whether bleeding my radiatorswas successful? When the bleed valve is sitting inside a large nut then this nut can be removed and replaced but if it’s just a screw on an old radiator bleed valve then if it’s broken or too worn you might not be able to replace it. A radiator spanner can mean different things to different people. My radiator spanner keys Radiator Valve Tails There are a couple of different reasons why your radiator might need bleeding. Once your heating is turned on, run your hands along the top of the radiator. If it’s cold at the top and hot at the bottom, there’s likely to be a build-up of air in the system. It’s always a good idea to use an actual radiator bleed key to bleed your radiators, as this reduces the chance of damage to the valve (and a potentially costly repair or replacement).

Odd smells from your engine, especially sweet smells (caused by antifreeze leaking and/or burning up.)

Don't miss out!

Only use a flathead, though, not a crosshead screwdriver – as this can damage the valve. And definitely don’t use pliers, for the same reason. Which radiator to bleed first? Sometimes found on older radiator models, a bleed screw doesn’t have a valve to replace or remove. Instead, you will find a small screw on its own. They’ll be in different locations depending on the radiator but will commonly be found at either the top right or top left. It is possible to replace these but more often than not when you have a problem with one of these, it's time for a new radiator instead. Screw valve When radiators have cold areas frequently, trapped air might not be the issue. Cold spots can be brought on by dirt and rust that accumulate over time, but they can also be an indication that your system is leaking. So you want to bleed a radiator because there’s nothing more disheartening than waking up on a freezing day to radiators that refuse to warm up.
