About this deal

This is an ok solution if you are planning on painting the object you’re working with as the paint will hide it, but if you’re staining, waxing or similar the filler is going to be visible and stand out like a sore thumb!

Appleby Woodturnings are specialist manufacturers of Tapered Wood Pellets also known as Plugs, Tuts and Bungs, used for the surface concealment of screw and bolt heads. By this we mean trying to match any shapes, patterns or shading in the grain itself so that when the plug is fixed in place and sanded down it becomes almost invisible to the eye. Many experts recommend using self-drilling screws when screwing into wood filler because they are particularly stable and sturdy. Insert the plug into the stripped screw until the lip is flush with the surface. You can tap it in with a hammer or use a utility knife to scrape off the part above the surface. Remove the old screw using a screwdriver or drill driver and bit. If the screw cannot spin out because the hole is too loose, pull it out with longnose pliers.

If you have enough room in the piece of wood you’re working with, you can simply drill a new hole. Filling in the hole that is too big is easy – a little wood filler, for instance, or a wood plug, since you won’t be using it. We drilled down very carefully so that we didn’t go too deep and also to avoid damaging the edges of the hole itself. If any blow out or tearing is caused this can seriously affect the finished appearance as, regardless if the plug fits perfectly, any missing or damaged timber around the hole will stand out a mile off.

As mentioned above, getting an attractive and professional visual finish that you can be proud of is certainly satisfying when you know you have achieved it yourself and small details such as visible screw heads can easily ruin this. Next, pop the plug into the hole and gently push it down with your thumb. If the plug and the hole are both precisely 8mm the fit should be tight.

Scrap off cuts will also obviously be the same, so making them invisible once inserted into your timber is certainly more than achievable. You can screw into wood filler once it has cured well and is fully dry. Wood filler can only hold small screws that carry a very small amount of load or stress. If you want the screw to hold weight, you can use an epoxy or two-part filler, which sets harder. Once the glue has had time to fully set, the final tasks are now to trim it up and then sand it flat and flush with the surrounding surface.

Self-tapping screws are screws that create their own thread as they are driven into a material, ensuring a strong, tight fit. They are best used in soft materials such as softwoods and plastic. A pilot hole that’s slightly smaller in diameter needs to be pre-drilled before fitting. Many manufacturers claim that their particular product will take stain in a similar manner to timber, but in practice this is rarely the case. Wood glue isn’t just a good adhesive, because it can come in handy when repairing screw holes in wood. After filling it with wood glue, you might need to sand it down to get it uniform with the remaining flooring. We talk hole size, so all sizes of pellets are to suit your exact hole drilled (e.g. if you drill a 12mm hole it's our 12mm pellet you require) as each pellet is slightly smaller at the bottom compared to the top. In this example were going to be hiding the screw head in a piece of pine but we’re going to use a piece of oak to make our plug.

As stated above, the timber you use is entirely up to you. Use a matching piece to hide teh screw head or someting a little different if you want to accentuate the plug. When choosing the thread, consider the density of the timber. It’s best to use fine threads for hard timber and coarse threads for soft timber.Drill down 10mm or so ensuring that the depth of the plug is greater than the depth of the hole it’s going to fill. Consider what material the plasterboard will be attached to, as different screws are suitable for different materials. For example, there are drywall to heavy steel screws, drywall to light steel screws, and drywall to wood screws. Roofing screws are available in carbon steel and hardened steel. And, as they are most commonly used for outdoor applications, they have a coating that protects them from the elements and stops rusting. They’re available in gauge sizes ranging from 4 to 6.3mm and lengths ranging from 16 to 120mm.
