About this deal

Kerry Fowler | Sainsbury’s Magazine’s ‘Book Club Choice’ for September 2022 ‘I honestly can’t overemphasise how much I loved Flamingo, I couldn’t put it down. Obdachlos geht er seiner Arbeit als Maler und Lackierer nicht mehr nach und verbringt seine Tage mit einem Porzellanschaf unter freiem Himmel. Before she joined Penguin Young Readers, Margaret worked at HarperCollins Children’s Books for 17 years where she acquired Fancy Nancy, Pete the Cat, The Bad Seed series, and Hoda Kotb’s bestselling picture books I’ve Loved You Since Forever and You Are My Happy. We step in to these lives like a stranger, we step out, we see what we want, we are told what we need to know, sometimes we learn the truth, sometimes that sets us free, sometimes that changes the past and we grow a little more, sometimes it breaks us, but breakdown can be breakthrough.

I would describe it as a relatively simple uplifting, hard-wrenching and ultimately life affirming novel but written in a style which to me at least seems to be inspired by Ali Smith – kind of like Ali Smith writing a screenplay for a Richard Curtis movie. Elliot’s characters are all complex, slightly damaged people, all doing the best they can, taking chances, wrapping themselves up in work, looking back with anger, nursing long held loves, they feel real and believable. What a like about the book is that it not only tells the adventures of a running a hotel, but also deals with different themes.I don't want to give too much away but the novel flicks back and forth between timeframes, and we learn more about some of the characters' backgrounds and childhoods which I loved. Daniel Berry, der Protagonist in Rachel Elliotts neustem Buch "Flamingo", wird von seiner Freundin Erica verlassen. In 2022, she co-won the Mairtín Crawford Award for Poetry, was a winner in the Poetry Society Member’s Competition, won first and second prize in the Second Light Poetry Competition, came second in the York Poetry Prize, been commended in both the Hippocrates Prize for Medicine and Poetry and the Verve Poetry Competition, shortlisted for the Oxford Brookes International Poetry Competition, longlisted for the National Poetry Competition, and her pamphlet manuscript was highly commended in the 2021 and 2022 Mslexia Pamphlet Competition.

It's only when you have read and thought about it that you can really start to appreciate what an incredible author Rachel Elliott is, and how layered and nuanced her novel is. Longlisted for the Women's Prize for Fiction 2022, Flamingo is a contemporary novel that follows two families primarily over two different time periods.Never shying away from what is hard or painful, these poems keep rebellion as their lodestar, conjuring an energy which shines with wit and compassion. The mix of people allows Elliot to examine different lives from different perspectives, and giving us insights into the lies people tell each other to keep each other safe.
