About this deal

In fog or other low visibility conditions, you should turn on your main headlights. Fog lights should be activated in addition to your dipped headlights when visibility falls to less than 100m. An LED strip on the front of some cars are called Daytime Running Lights (DRL) and have been fitted to all new cars in the UK since 2011. They turn on whenever the car is switched on and are there to make the car more visible to other road users. They do not perform the same function as front fog lights. Basically, the argument FOR dual rear fogs is centered strictly around using them ONLY in cases of severe fog. The dual set up improves visability for the following driver, (he will see you sooner), and two lights set far apart gives depth perception to the following driver which a single light can not give. The "On" pin of the switch connects to a 12v feed from a splice into the wire of the r/fog light switch for pin 1 (which is 12v+ only when the side lights are on).

The live core of the twin cable goes to the middle pin of my new switch, the earth core to the switch's earth pin (for the tell tale light only). Some newer cars have foregone front fog lights in favour of the bright LED daytime running lights (DRLs) that are now a legal requirement on new models. These serve a similar purpose to front fog lights when visibility is poor - they're not designed to light your way (even though some are so bright that they can do exactly that), but rather they're designed to make you more visible to other road users. How to use your car’s fog lights Ran accross this post by mistake, but I know the answer to your rear fog only working on left side... In UK market cars with rear fog lights factory fitted from new, the rear fog light should only be able to be switched on when the side lights or head lights are on. There are similar stipulations for imported vehicles going through the IVA test. However the same requirement is not mentioned in the MOT test manual. I still think it makes sense to wire them up so they can only be switched on when the other lights are on (and that is how I do it). How to find the rear fog light(s) i took diode out position 2 from the right side, put it in d3,the alarm for head lights being on,worked again,as did the alarm for the fog light, but still no fog light, the light on the switch remained not working and bulb don't light upThis then led me to believe that the switch on the indicator stalk was faulty or there was loose wiring connecting the switch to the circuitry on the rear of the unit housing the multifunction stalks and squib. However after removing the plastic housing I can see that the wires are intact and are still soldered to the circuit board. I have replaced the bulb holder, bulb and lens on the offside rear of the vehicle (peviously replacing these on the nearside fixed the reverse light issue) but this has not resolved the issue.

If the above test is successful, is removing the airbag / steering wheel a straightforward job? What do I need to be aware of? i.e do I need to disconnect the battery etc In the case of the 2016 Volvo S60 (pictured), a couple rear lights illuminate when you push the button, making the Volvo much easier to spot on the highway in the fog and other poor conditions. Volvo lights are one of the most common examples of rear fog lights. The rear fog lamp is a useful safety feature, but issues arise when drivers are unaware of the feature and switch on the fog lights in normal driving conditions. Sure, you might get a little extra forward road illumination, but you’re also unknowingly blinding drivers behind you and sometimes even making them think you’re braking. Therefore, these optional fog lights should not be used as normal driving lights. If your vehicle has rear fog lights, only switch them on when you are driving in fog, snow or other conditions that may prevent another driver from seeing your vehicle. Does Your Car Have Fog Lights in the Rear?

Having read The Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989, which state[if I read them correctly], that the minimum separation distance between 2 red reflectors is 600mm and the maximum distance from each the side of the vehicle is 400mm.These dimensions apply to the Alphard. When I unplugged the wires connecing the rear fog lamp switch to the loom, the voltmeter was still reading 8 - 9v on the rear bulb holder. Dangler. I’m not a fan, but it is a legitimate option for adding a rear fog light. You won’t miss it.

I’ve read a few posts recently, in which people are asking “where is the rear fog light?” or alternatively “where is the rear fog light switch?” This is my response to reading those posts, and it may turn into a small rant but I hope it is useful all the same. It may also help answer the question I see being asked many times: “what is this extra switch for on my dashboard?” I'm convinced the clue to the problem is the dim light in the foglight switch that's always on with the ignition, but extinguinguished when the stalk light switch is turned on. As per the Highway Code, fog lights should be switched off when the visibility is normal, or if it improves after a period of being foggy. Leaving the fog lights on can dazzles drivers ahead. Neither the front nor the rear fog lights can be left turned on when your vehicle is parked, or you may get fined for incorrect usage of your fog lights. Do All Cars Have Fog Lights? You MUST NOT use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226) as they dazzle other road users and can obscure your brake lights. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves. Using them at the proper time ought to aid safe driving, however, their usage when unwarranted can mean that you are breaking the law and endangering other drivers.

Take a minute to see if your car has rear fog lights. Put the car in Park, turn on the engine and then turn on the headlights. Walk around to see how your car looks with just the headlights switched on from the rear. See the pattern of the taillights? If you have someone who can help you, have them press the brake pedal so you can see what your brake lights look like. Now push the fog light button and return to the rear of the car. Notice any brighter lights that are similar in brightness to your brake lights? Then you’ve got rear fog lights as well. Now that you’re aware of this, using them should be restricted to poor visibility conditions — and not to annoy the poor guy behind you. Feel free to illuminate your headlights, driving lights and even front fog lamps (if they can be turned on independently from the rear fog lamps), but save your rear fog lamps for foggy weather. TOP TIP: If you don’t have a helper, park next to something reflective. A wall or garage door will do. Anyway here are a few links, but just don't let others lead you down the path, get on google and do some homework yourself. I see both sides of the argument, and I can see merit in both reasoning. But it is strange that people like us live in europe and embrace things differently than we do. Your first question has an elusive answer, not quite found it yet myself, but after reading a lot on the topic it seems that regulations may be adopting the idea of the rear fog light, and in some states, (California and Oregon are example), having dual fog lights is legal. This whole issue may be at the state DOT level right now, which would be a problem if you drove into a state that only allowed a single for that type light.

I'm concerned by activating the airbag by mistake when connecting the wires to the new unit (I don't really understand how the airbag is activated / what safety precautions I need to take) b) use dual colour led bulbs in reverse lights, extending cable from existing fog lamp loom - doable, and really easy to replace bulbs/maintenance if need be.

How to check your lights and bulbs

It must be secure and be able to be operated from the normal driving position. It should have a ‘tell tale’ i.e. a light that comes on when the fog lights are on, to remind the driver of this fact. Most of the time, the light is built into the switch. This means the switch can’t be hidden out of sight. For many generations citizens have driven in the USA without Rear fogs, and unless you live in area that has cronic fog, or blinding snow storms etc., they are of no use at all. Thus the new relay coil is activated by my new fog light switch, only if the side lights are on and the rear fog light circuit is injected with 12v from the rear lights instead of via the MFU at the front. To help motorists keep be as safe as possible, here’s a helpful look into the way to drive in the fog, how to use your fog lights, and how to understand your fog lights symbols. What Do Fog Lights Do? A Dremel came in handy to embed the switch neatly into the blank. I used a worndown cutting disc and a router/cutter
