About this deal

This updated edition of Gemstones of the World contains a new chapter on the treatment of gemstones, expanded information on what's 'New on the Market' and 400 additional stones. In addition to the perennially successful Gemstones of the World, first published in 1976, he has authored Collins Guide to Rocks, Minerals, and Gemstones and Handbook of Rocks, Minerals, and Gemstones, among other authoritative guides. Yet because of clever use of headers, shaded sections, illustrations, and white space, the text never seems cramped. By contrast, this book is clearly laid out, informative, includes obscure/little known gemstones, and has good photographs. Truly the ultimate one-volume book every hobbyist, jeweler, jewelry maker, and rockhound will ever need!

The book concludes with charts of traditional astrological stones, the more recent birthstone-by-month designations, and some remarks on medicinal uses of stones (clearly not recommended by the author, but added for the curious). Specialists in earth science products since 1998, we serve the public, universities and colleges throughout the Globe as well as offering trade accounts to a wide range of geological services.

He vaguely describes the treatment as creating a thin metal layer on the stone, similar to a foil backing. Starting a gemstone collection couldn't be any easier with this 'Gemstones of the World' display box. The text is easily comprehensible to those at least somewhat familiar with the science of gemology, and it does a reasonably good job explaining the concepts for a novice.

True-color photographs picturing gemstones, many in rough and polished states, with full details of where they are found, how they are mined and cut, how they are imitated, how they are identified and classified, what their characteristics and physical properties are. All the gemstones are treated in their many variations: more than 1,500 full-color photos showcase each precious and semiprecious stone in both its rough, natural, and its polished and cut renditions. And then there are the magnificent photographs of the stones themselves in brilliant full-color, with full data on the facing page.

And this updated edition contains a host of new findings on “Gemstones for Collectors,” additional gems in the “Table of Constants,” and the “double fraction” figures that experts have long wanted—a very special new feature.
