About this deal

This book was a very pleasant surprise and I'm glad I had the chance to listen to it. The author is a defence lawyer who started in New York & takes on cases that are really putting our empathy & compassion to test. Mongrain, M., Chin, J. M., & Shapira, L. M. (2010). Practicing compassion increases happiness and self-esteem. Journal of Happiness Studies, 12 (6), 963-981. Ensure health and care environments have compassionate leadership and nurturing cultures that enable both care and staff support to be high-quality, continually improving and compassionate.

The Courage of Compassion is a gorgeously written guide to our criminal justice system seen through the life of one of its heroes. Steinberg’s raw exploration of the relationships that forged her provides a blueprint to forge a more just world. If you care about justice, read the book.” The impact of the pandemic on the nursing and midwifery workforce has been unprecedented and will be felt for a long time to come. The crisis has also laid bare and exacerbated longstanding problems faced by nurses and midwives, including inequalities, inadequate working conditions and chronic excessive work pressures.

This review, from the Kings Fund, investigated how to transform nurses’ and midwives’ workplaces so that they can thrive and flourish and are better able to provide the compassionate, high-quality care that they wish to offer. Suzie Bailey, Director of Leadership and Organisational Development at The King’s Fund adds “The current system is not sustainable. Nursing and midwifery are fantastic professions, full of skilled, caring and dedicated people. The pandemic has brought many challenges, but in response we’ve seen new ways of delivering care and supporting staff that could bring benefits beyond the crisis.” When we commissioned the report, we were conscious of two things. First, that there had already been a number of studies on this issue; and secondly, that COVID-19 was having a profound impact, exacerbating the issue of a workforce already experiencing stress, burn out and mental ill health. Let’s talk about that. Let’s enlighten that little flame and see what we can do for the people around us and then… on a larger scale, what can we do for our countries and, even larger, for the world. The reasons why I publish this article here is that I have put all my hope and strength on my generation and those generations that will follow us up. We are the fertile ground where we can build on. And that’s the root we need to cure to improve, empower and enlighten this beautiful world.

Work continues to disseminate the approach to compassionate leadership presented in the report. This includes online training programmes and bespoke training programmes at a local level. It was always the ambition of the RCN Foundation and the King's Fund, that The Courage of Compassionand its recommendations became part of the culture of nursing and midwifery. Compassion is conceptualized as one form of emotional work and is theoretically developed through a model that highlights the subprocesses of noticing, feeling, and responding.” (Miller, 2007). Wanting to be a good mom to Valentine, Susan began to research such things as proper care and the best diet, but this research also led to discovering a disturbing trend. Many people would get potbellied pigs as pets assuming—and often told by breeders—they would always stay small. Once they grew to adult size, these animals were often abandoned and discarded. This discovery led Susan to help rescue and relocate a couple of potbellied pigs to an animal sanctuary in Thunder Bay. Miller, K. (2007). Compassionate communication in the workplace: Exploring processes of noticing, connecting, and responding. Journal of Applied Communication Research, 35 (3), 223-245.

Overview

Susan gets emotional as she shares this story: “That was really hard because she was healthy otherwise. She's one that gets to me. She was so sweet. You love them all, but there are always a couple that pull your heartstrings. When I think about them individually, there is something very special about every single one of them. But when I'm thinking about the whole group, Trixie, Edgar and Valentine—my first potbellied pig—are the ones that touched me the most.” Trixie relaxing in the sun's rays. lessons and examples of good practice from across the health and care system, from both before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. Miller, K. (2007). Compassionate communication in the workplace: Exploring processes of noticing, connecting, and responding. Journal of Applied Communication Research, 35 (3), 223-245. Many of us are aware our ‘justice’ system does not always serve the people it vows to protect. This book gives us a glimpse of what that looks like from the inside, a first hand account of a public defender and how she, along with others, navigated the system while advocating for those at disadvantage in their fight for justice. That said, I also agree with the author this book is not just about our justice system but rather a book on what it means to be human, to see others through the lens of our shared humanity. This review investigated how to transform nurses’ and midwives’ workplaces so that they can thrive and flourish and are better able to provide the compassionate, high-quality care that they wish to offer.
