About this deal

You can easily make PVA size yourself from white glue and water (you can buy it premixed, but it's about six times more expensive than making your own). However, a note of caution: Elmer's white glue is not pH neutral and is not suitable for use as a size—use a brand like Lineco instead. The natural tensile strength of linen canvas demands a strong frame to support it. Choosing a keyable canvas stretchergives you the ability to adjust the tension of the frame over time, ensuring your canvas stays taut and firm.

Depending on where you live, the time it may take for your exchanged product to reach you, may vary. Some painters like the look of the texture of the weave showing through so they do not add many coats of primer, just enough to seal the canvas and give a white ground. Renaissance masters preferred a super-smooth surface created by applying many coats of primer, sanding between each, until the weave was completely obscured. For the past few years, I've been preparing my own linen and painting surfaces for a fraction of the cost of buying rolls of primed linen or ready-made canvases.

The options are endless, keep in mind the surface prep that may be necessary depending on the condition of your particular project. This 11oz weight hemp canvas has more surface texture than the portrait grade linen above, otherwise they have similar appearance, strength, and longevity. As you add more layers of primer the weave will become filled, and the canvas will get smoother. If you prefer to work on acrylic ground, then all you need to do is add more layers of gesso until you have a surface texture that appeals to you. Oil Primer Use a transition colour. Our faves are Pebble, Sterling, or any of the medium greys in the Fusion line! Several types of goods are exempt from being returned. Perishable goods such as food, flowers, newspapers or magazines cannot be returned. We also do not accept products that are intimate or sanitary goods, hazardous materials, or flammable liquids or gases.

Gesso is the foundation of a painting. It is a paint like substance that is brushed on a canvas or substrate to prepare it for painting. It’s purpose is to protect the canvas from paint and provide a smooth painting surface. The brushed on gesso also has a bit of “tooth” which makes paint adhere to it. Follow along as Jennylyn teaches you her best tips for how to paint light over dark with Fusion Mineral Paint! In short, linen has a distinct interesting personality, compared to cotton, which is a highly standardized commercial product.

Size, Primer, Gesso and Ground

Linen with two applications of PVA size. The water in the size has caused the canvas to tighten up.

Not only are they low VOC, they are also free from many other chemicals currently in other lines of paints such as ammonia and formaldehyde. Wet your brush in clean water and apply to your chosen colour. Dab the colour into a concentrated splodge onto a clean palette. Add plenty of colour so that you have enough paint to finish your piece. This ensure that the colour is consistent throughout. The color of finished linen is determined largely by the conditions in which the flax was grown (for more on the life cycle of natural linen, from flax plant to homewares, go here). The growing and production process affects the colors of flax fibers. This means that different rolls of undyed linen fabric could be different colors, depending on their source and when they were produced. You will need to use a primed canvas and paint on a few coats of Watercolour Ground so that the paint will absorb enough to flow properly. This article should help: Painting Watercolour on Canvas.I like to leave areas of the linen showing through but you can cover the entire space with paint if you prefer. Dab the paint gently and take particularly at the outline where the colour can easily spread. The varnish must be diluted before use and low-odour mineral spirits do not work, they react badly with it.
