About this deal

Random House presents the audiobook edition of Ikigai by Héctor García and Francesc Miralles, read by Noako Mori.

This is reminiscent of the later ‘realistic’ author John le Carré who claimed that MI6 only allowed The Spy Who Came In From The Cold to be published because it was not at all realistic. The book is in the public domain in Canada (perhaps not everywhere else) and can be read at Project Gutenberg or Faded Page. This chapter made me really dislike Ashenden himself, though I hadn't warmed to him anyway as he seems so self-satisfied.Advent and Christmas draw us into the darkness: Advent to prepare us and Christmas to pierce the darkness with love, before the tiny light of Christ at Christmas grows into a blinding flash at the resurrection. It works best as a collection of short stories linked by a house (and sometimes characters turning up again), rather than a novel, but that made it all the better for me. The British government asked Somerset Maugham not to include several other stories in the novel, as they revealed too much about the methods and activities of Britain’s spies. Alapvetően ez az atmoszféra az, amitől végig jó volt nekem a kötetben: a békebeli európaiság leheletét érezni benne, amire elviselhetetlen súllyal nehezedik a háttérben zajló világégés, az a világégés, ami aztán pozdorjává is zúzta a fenn említett békebeliséget.

This seemed to be especially the case with the Englishman Caypor, who has a German wife, and the American businessman Harrington. He was a member of the General Synod of the Church of England for 20 years, and was appointed one of the theological canonries at Chichester Cathedral. Maugham's beautiful writing evokes the life of a spy and is based on his own spying experiences during World War 1.The experiences of being occasionally arrested and interrogated by the KGB and other security services while visiting played an important part in the development of his views on totalitarianism and awareness of the threat that Marxism posed to the faith. Maugham portrays the entire business of spying as bizarre and cruel, with spies used as pawns and morality a weakness. The psalmist certainly thought so:- “The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. Ashenden' tells the history of Ashenden Park through the events that occur during each of the inhabitants' time there, spanning more than two centuries. The Hairless Mexican is ready to ‘get his hands dirty’ to stop a revolutionary bringing Greece into the war on the side of Germany. Maugham's semi-autobiographical notes of nearly a century ago with his secret service's experiences throughout "the world of yesterday" as another gentleman has aptly put it (a certain Mr.

Maugham went on to say that many of the events in the stories occurred, but no single person would see the whole of a case. It is definitely not the edge-of-your-seat stuff of later spy thrillers in which the work of intelligence gathering often becomes life-threatening business, although Maugham makes crystal clear that there are risks involved in what Ashenden does.

Throughout the novel, the morality of Ashenden's sphere of action becomes increasingly compromised until at the end he arrives at the gates of a newly unstable modern world. Ashenden is a fictionalized version of Maugham himself, who did actually work for the British Secret Service in Switzerland and Russia during the First World War. Somerset Maugham is a character in Philip Kerr's The Other Side of Silence , and Bernie Gunther kind of recommends Ashenden, which I'm not sure I had heard of earlier. You cannot escape it, and should you take pains to guard against it, it will make use of those very pains to trip you up. Here we have the sophisticated multi-lingual Englishman of good breeding fighting those Axis spies during the First World War. Just as they say the real life of a policeman is about slogging away at a case, not being a lucky maverick, so Ashenden's life as a secret agent is mostly taken up with watching his friends and foes and trying to tell one from the other. The book is certainly not 'exciting' in the way that we have come to expect within the thriller genre. There was one odd story in which a British ambassador tells Ashenden the story of a youthful love affair, which seemed to have nothing to do with the rest of the novel.
