I thought of us there, maiden and mother, waxing and full. And the Witch in her castle, the crone. The waning moon, swallowed by darkness. b In the cathedral, the cluster of candles at the shrines swelled each day. Not a single companion had ever returned after being chosen by the Witch. To be taken from their masterful positions and turned over to the use of a woman. I thought the Witch took them because she could. Because it was a transgression. Who would lose sleep over another woman sacrificed? Bitterthorn tugged on the threads of my heartstrings until I had nothing left to give it but my soul. Hauntingly beautiful, this Gothic fairytale lingers in the darkest corners of my mind forever more. A triumph -- Saara El-Arifi - Sunday Times bestselling author of The Final Strife

Oh don’t be so superstitious, Jo. It’s not like she’d want any of us. You’re not a man, are you.’ Klara shivered. This is a short introduction to the world of Faerie by author Kay L Moody. A young adult fantasy, I enjoy these even though I don’t qualify anymore… And the covers for this series are beautiful. So to sum it up, I have some considerable reservation about this book, but... I still really enjoyed it? I was listening to the audio which is very well done. This is also historical fantasy which I wasn't expecting. The story is set in Prussia/Germany and Bismark is mentioned! 🤭 But overall the historical elements don't play bigger role. The story is also a loose retelling of Beauty & the Beast, especially in the first half and I was SO into that! Especially the wolf scene gets modified for the better and I loved that: the protagonist twists her ankle while on a walk outside and can't make it into the castle on her own. She is afraid because she hears wolfs howling around the wood, but then she scolds herself because it's much more probable that she'll freeze to death than that the wolves eat her. Then the witch comes to get her and they bunk together in the winter woods.Dream or not, this might be her only chance for a real adventure before she’d be forced to marry a stranger. How could she say no to that? On a lighter moment, there's also heaps of sapphic yearning, grumpy x sunshine, a strange and sinister castle, terrible flirting, cottage core vibes, slowburn enemies to loves and a secret that threatens to destroy everything Mina and the Witch have found in each other. I'm not sure how I feel about this one. I was never a person that would pay much attention to the person and tense the story was told in, I usually won't even notice it, but here I noticed the first person immediately and it grated on me just a little bit. It got better as the book progressed and things started happening, but overall, the way the story was told wasn't my favourite. Before getting married off, Elora is determined to have one last adventure. She sneaks out to climb a tree and is met with a magical dryad who asks for help. On this day I was pleased to have the old furs, something my mother would have recognised. It made me feel closer to her in some small, meaningless way. I thought of Frieda Hässler, her arms and hands rough from spinning and scrubbing floors, her solitary, grief-marked life. My hands were as rough as hers, my arms as muscled. My grief as ever-present. There's some magic, but mostly it is physical action that keeps them moving forward, not spells or enchantments or whatever. There's actual fights, everyone, where the female mc is the adventurer, the so to speak knight, and the prince is the one in distress.
