About this deal

Without prejudice to the section Liability below, the Service may be temporarily unavailable during maintenance, updates, etc. We shall make reasonable efforts to inform you of any unavailability due to maintenance or updates. The Starward distillery is looking to make its mark in Europe Starward Left-Field: a marvellously mixable malt

Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. We do not sell, nor does the Service provide any option to buy, any alcoholic products. Twenty-two Gold medals were also awarded by the judges, including seven for Lark, five for Starward and four for Copper and Grain Distilling Co. Lark’s Rebellion whisky was described as having “cinnamon and aniseed, with some citrus and apricot compote”, while one judge enjoyed Starward Rum Cask Release IV for its “huge spice and fruitcake notes”. The finish is long and generally soft, before becoming slightly hot and peppery right at the end. The sweet elements and then the fruity characeristics fade and this leaves the malted cereals from the nose and warming baking spices from the palate to become more prominent. Nose: Fruity notes come from tannic red apple skin, strawberry laces, apricot jam, orange peel, fresh raspberries and mango slices in juice. Alongside them is a dusting of cacao powder, oaky vanilla, ginger beer, a little charred chilli pepper. Then demerara sugar, maple syrup, nougat and milky coffee. Around the edges, toasted almonds and marzipan make an appearance, with some fresh nutmeg grated on top for good measure. The first category to be put to the test was blended whiskies from Europe, where three Master medallists were discovered. The first went to Bellevoye Orange, a whisky from France that was matured in rum barrels. It was praised by Gorn for its “nice tropical fruit and vanilla” notes. Greifer enjoyed its hint of “orchard fruits” and “lengthy finish”. Lawrenny Estate Distillery won two Golds for its Cellar Collection Sherry Cask and Cellar Collection Bourbon Cask bottlings. The former was enjoyed for its “burnt toffee, fortified wine, plum syrup on the nose”.

Founded by David Vitale in 2013, Starward has become the fastest growing Australian whisky brand, bringing together skilled brewers and ex-winemakers. The brand’s portfolio has received a number of accolades since then, including Australian Brand Innovator of the Year at the 2018 World Whisky Awards. No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service. The second Master winner, Nestville Whisky Single Barrel from Slovakia, was lauded for its “strong bold malt flavours, with a lovely hint of spice and fruit at the end” by Greifer. Neotia added: “Toffee apple with cinnamon, clove and dark chocolate dusting. Round, sweet, and smooth.”Records the default button state of the corresponding category & the status of CCPA. It works only in coordination with the primary cookie. The Starward Left-Field is a revelation. It tastes older than it undoubtedly is (all Starward's are released at a relatively young age due to the Melbourne climate) and is sweet, juicy and very easy going. We imagine that it will be amazingly versatile, which is exactly how Starward design their whiskies. A whisky distilled in Melbourne is not really as outrageous as it sounds. The city is surrounded by some of Australia's best wine regions and has had a craft brewery scene that can hold its own against any major city in the world. So it was only a matter of time before somebody had the bright idea to create a Melbourne whisky.

The Taste Master award for the most impressive expression in the competition went to an Australian whisky, Starward Fortis, after the judges retasted all of the Master medallists. The colour is deep gold with a slight reddish tint and the nose has an interesting mix of sweet and fruity aromas. Aromas of toffee, golden syrup, caramel and marshmallow mingle with dried fruits (think of raisins and dark cherries in particular) and crisp red apple. Malted cereals and a good pinch of baking spices add depth and complexity. The final European flight, New Make, saw two Golds go to two English producers: Spirit of Manchester for its One Point Six, and Ellers Farm for The Bairn.
