About this deal

I was brooding over it a while and I think I have to say that objectively this is a solid 4 star read with a 5 star worldbuilding. After reconstructing the early pouch development of the thylacine, we still wanted to understand when during its growth the Tasmanian tiger established its canine-like skull shape. And -- fortunately -- there's no love interest, no extended angsting, no sexual awakening, no rebellion against the adult realm. Seeing the character overcome their emotional burdens to thrive in this harsh world was empowering to read. But as she flees the only man she fears, Maniye starts a journey of self-discovery only to find out that she really is not that special (which is great after a whole life spent as a village freak).

Maniye belongs to the wolf clan, yet she has never really belonged, outcast as the only daughter of the sonless wolf king and a deceased mother of the tiger clan.Hesprec is a character who grew on me more as the book went on, and I think his character is vital for Maniye to learn from and develop.

The Tiger and the Wolf - Goodreads

The payoff is good — but it does take a while to get there, and unlike in his science fiction stories I did feel the weight of the pages it took before we got to the end. Wolves are pack animals and have the use of fire, so they have stronger swords and armour and better tactics for pack hunting. Let me guess: You think they will meet, fight a little with each other and then fall madly in love, while saving their respective kingdoms from an evil overlord! This long anticipated novel didn’t fail to impress and, with the publication of Spiderlight in the summer, it looks like Tchaikovsky will continue to make his presence felt in the world of genre fiction – or, at the very least, on my bookshelf. The world is similar to our bronze/iron age where it’s preindustrial (iron has just been discovered), but it’s not the typical medieval setting, oh no.Don’t even get me started on the absolute delight of this entirely entertaining jape that is the animal hand-to-hand (claw-to-claw, more precisely) combat.
