It is at this point very clear that the Japanese have achieved nothing short of absolute mastery, as these buildings are an incredible feat of engineering, and the knowledge of wood and total command of simple tools is astonishing. By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions. Japanese joinery is viewed by many as being an art as well as a craft or trade, and this is borne out by the intricate design and craftsmanship of the joints in this book. I am a second generation homebuilder and woodworker and am intensely fascinated with alternative ways of building that pay more respect to the materials we use.

Overview: The Genius of Japanese Carpentry focuses on Japan’s foremost carpenters who combine the timeless past and living present.

Japanese Joinery showcases traditional and modern joinery techniques through beautiful photography and detailed technical illustrations.

If you have any interest in carpentry, timber framing, woodworking, or even Japanese history, I highly recommend this book. This lively introduction to Japanese joinery not only delves lovingly into the unique history and development of Japanese carpentry, but also reveals many secrets of Japanese joinery. Reminds me of the old Chinese architecture that’s been lost to the high rises except in a few cases like the Forbidden City in Beijing. There are several fascinating layers to the book itself — for one, the simple fact that Brown himself was given permission to follow the construction so closely (especially being a foreigner and outsider). Overview: The tools, techniques and philosophies that make Japan’s unique woodworking culture so special. Featuring intricate, puzzle-like joinery and the integration of timber pieces to orient them in the same direction as when it was a growing tree, this book skillfully documents the stunning craftsmanship of the ancient Japanese, which is still alive today. The context seems to be the building trade, rather than furniture making, though naturally some of the joints can be used in both.
