Scapa Glansa Scotch Whisky : The Whisky Exchange

Mouth: very soft, not to say watery. Mid-palate a nice fruitiness appears (more crisp apple and juicy pear) with lemon peels and a bit of honey and butterscotch sweetness. Then malty notes appear, as well as some plankish wood and green tea.Nose: Delicate scented floral flavours with a hint of fresh pear. Sweet and fruity pineapple notes with a citrus tang. There’s only a handful of bottlings on the market, unless you believe all these undisclosed Orkney whiskies are from Scapa distillery. It is an interesting distillery though, with the only working Lomond (wash) still left in the Scotch whisky industry (albeit with modifications). To be honest I struggle to detect any smoke or peat, however it has a very pleasant balance and is well made. Price is fair, this is much better than (for instance) Highland Park 12, but obviously cannot match HP 18 which sells at 2.5 x the price. Shame Scapa is 16 no long made. Underneath all this is of curse a wonderful, dense whiff of bonfire smoke, filled with charcoal and sulphur.

This creates richness and depth, with notes of warm, heather honey and soft fruits giving way to a subtle smoky finish. September 2016 marked the launch of Scapa Glansa, the latest single malt whisky expression from the Orcadian distillery, Scapa. This is the first peated whisky from the Scapa range and brings a unique flavour that represents the diverse and unexpected contrasts of the island it is distilled upon. The tang and the smooth caramel come together perfectly and also contribute to an easy-going mouth feel. There are events taking place all over the world celebrating this oak-aged spirit, including tastings and guided tours. The finish is long and winding, allowing the smoke to move like it is coming straight off a peat fire.
