About this deal

Perfect as a double measure in an iced-filled Wessex chalice , our premium gin can be paired with light tonic water and garnished with a twist of orange. The Anglo Saxon Chronicle is silent as to Alf’s alcoholic preferences, but we can be pretty sure he didn’t drink gin, since it didn’t exist. He did, however, foster scholarship, personally translate religious texts, and implement an organised network of fortifications for the repelling of invading Danes. Which is almost as worthwhile as drinking gin. The makers of Wessex Gin tie their booze into the legendary king by incorporating botanicals such as coriander (which ‘represents his appreciation of the importance of learning and scholarship’). Hmm. Tasting Notes: Our exceptionally smooth premium gin is precisely balanced, with a strong initial thump of juniper, followed by enlightening coriander and lively citrus endnotes. The perfectly ripe Sicilian lemons are hand-peeled by one of the family and infused with vacuum distilled ginger as well as our core botanicals. We carefully extract the most delicate flavours in higher pressures but lower temperatures. Ensuring we get all the best flavour.

From the strong lemon nose you can tell you’re getting a generous share of botanicals. To taste there’s a sharp bite with a rounded sweet finish. Crafting a delicious and effortlessly refreshing gin. Gooseberry and Elderflower Gin We wanted to bring a bit of Wessex magic to the gins,” says Jonathan, “so we started exploring the plants and herbs that were around in the Anglo-Saxon era – not just grown here, but also what might have been brought in from overseas.” The floral-inspired recipe is distilled with enlightening rose petals, hibiscus and refreshing lavender. The subtle floral notes are met with the traditional London dry botanicals ensuring a depth of flavour with a refreshing citrus finish. Resulting in a wonderfully smooth floral based gin to be perfectly enjoyed under the sun. As Jonathan says, “Alfred battled the Vikings throughout his entire reign, and this is reflected in the big thump of piney juniper.”

Top with lemonade or soda water and garnish with an orange slice, sliced strawberries, and a mint sprig.

Since gin was created in London in the 17th century, gin lovers have been striving to create the best English gin. We aim to honour traditional British gin, while also creating modern, innovative gin recipes for all to enjoy. Our Mission Statement:The time of Alfred the Great was one of great upheaval, and folk wisdom and religion played a huge role in binding the embattled Anglo-Saxons together and providing comfort and a sense of control. Herbal concoctions would have been used to heal physical and emotional hurts alike – not unlike a well-made G&T! A blanket of mystery and magic hung over the entire era, and Gill and Jonathan were keen to explore it further. Arriving on an industrial estate on a dark night was a little weird, but we were met by Chris and his faithful and welcoming pooch.

The time flew by, which is always a great sign of a fun evening and I’d highly recommend this experience to anyone and will definitely look to return with friends another time Awarded the IWSC 2022 UK Gin Producer of the Year trophy, Wessex Distillery is more than a mere producer of gin; it's a guardian of traditional English gin, an innovator of new flavour profiles, and a steward for sustainable, responsible production in the modern age. My money’s on the folk of Wessex being next to seceed. If only because they’d get to call it Wexit, which is marginally better than the coinage open to the good people of Sussex. When Jonathan and his wife, Gill decided to start up a brand new distillery, a passion project just for them and their amazing family to run together, they wanted to make sure that they were taking what they’d learned from their first go around and applying it in a new way.
