About this deal

I deserved something juicy and suspenseful but the little excitement it introduced quickly petered out and I was left unfulfilled. A secret that not only threatens to bring down a family dynasty, but also places Jane Tennison in mortal danger . This series is very well written with excellent plots that keep you reading long after you said you would finish. Overall, Dark Rooms was a weaker Tennison novel from Lynda La Plante, and one that does not really stand out when compared to some of the more impressive books in the series. Hugo soon sacked off the singing and resumed to sniffing the ground before wandering off-set, whilst the pair applaud his spotlight moment.

Hopefully I’ve not left spoilers but if you read this book then I hope you get a lot more out of it than I did. I really had an issue with the Jason Thorpe character, particularly at the end as the events reached their anti climactic climax. She studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art where some of her classmates were people like Ian McShane, Anthony Hopkins, and John Hurt. It's impossible to understand what the guy sees in Jane, she's very unpleasant, doesn't like anyone, is perpetually annoyed with everyone around, from her parents to her colleagues. I was worried going into a series at book 8 but I thoroughly enjoyed it and hope to go back and readIt has been a very long time since I have read a book by Lynda LaPlante and I wondering why after reading Dark Rooms. I was very disappointed when the character made a few poor choices during the investigation and furthermore discussing details of the case with her boyfriend and family I found it to be very unprofessional especially seeing she was just promoted to a senior position. Here however she's got her eye on the building's previous owner, Helena Lanark, and starts looking into the family. Anna Travis is a rookie female detective who has just been given her first murder case to investigate. Both sets of parents were awful, Eddies less so, and Jane’s sister didn’t seem to be anyone you’d want to grab a drink with either.

While she worked on “The Gentle Touch”, she worked on a treatment that was meant for a television series about a bank robbery that gets botched. Jane Tennison is one of my favourite fictional detectives and is back in print with ‘Dark rooms’ the eighth book in the series. It is now the mid-80s, and we meet up with Jane as she's moved into her new home and is having it renovated. But the grilling novel was soon outshone by Lynda's own dog, 16-month-old Hugo, and his unusual opera singing talent.

I also quite liked the quick journey to Australia that Tennison undertakes to get answers, which was a nice change of pace that I rather enjoyed. It is a lame attempt to delve into a family history in boring details to unearth a past crime which, I’m afraid, dims La Plante’s brilliant lights! In fact here - even though she's been prickly and standoffish in the past - I felt she's more authoritarian.

My belief in Lynda La Plante and Ruth Randell being the queens/inventors of psychological thrillers will never be shaken! This mystery gets even more complicated when the body of a young baby is also found in the basement. I also doubt this book was ever proof read considering the amount of mistakes i noticed while reading! Overall, i’m really disappointed and, despite hearing great things about La Plante, i will not be reading another of her novels.

Another famous piece by La Plante is Sleeping Cruelty, the story about a rich entrepreneur who just wants to feel like he belongs among the elite. Absorbing and fast-paced, 'Dark Rooms' presents a challenging investigation for a skilled and dedicated detective, working against the odds to achieve justice in yet another superb entry in the series. She dipped in and out of screenwriting and acting, best known for her magnificent work on the Prime Suspect televisions series. One of the immigrants almost kills him, and Anna bears most of the frustrations he has and helps get his wounds healing.
