From a very young age, humans are taught that nonmoral values like money, success, power, and fame are the driving values for societal behavior. I could feel the extrinsic pressures to perform well athletically and earn better grades. My parents never placed pressure on me to perform, but from the messages in the media, athletics, and school, I knew the outcome mattered more than the journey. If I wanted to be successful and contribute to society, then I had to earn a 4.0 GPA (grade point average) and if I wanted to run in college, I needed to run fast. In an effort to learn more about the training philosophies of some of the best trail and mountain runners in the world, I thought I would investigate just how much elevation gain said athletes run during an average week. Even though my intention was to use Strava as a tool, the more time I spent on Strava, the more toxic the application became for my wellbeing. I started comparing myself to my competitors. I felt a desire to look at Strava daily even though seeing everyone else’s activities further decreased my confidence in myself. I realized I did not run as much elevation, mileage, or even run on the trails as much during the week as my competitors, which made me question my coach and training philosophy.

Your device may have simply lost a connection to GPS satellites and did not record any data. Your Strava activity may be missing a map, show a straight line connecting your start and endpoints, or was automatically tagged as an indoor activity. Runners will look down at their watches and press a button on a wristwatch equipped with GPS. Only once the device has been set to record will they begin to move their feet. And at the end of the race the second remarkable feat will take place. Upon completion of their run, the runners will upload that GPS data to a digital platform that has completely revolutionised the world of amateur sport. When that happens, we’re confronted with what feels like a stark choice: either reject the data or reject our own memories and perceptions. And since neither is very attractive, we’re often left with a sense of cognitive dissonance. While Strava does its best to optimize our data analysis by ignoring the most obviously inaccurate data, in the end, we can only make the most out of the data provided to us from the GPS device. Put another way, when a device records bad GPS data, the only option that Strava has to improve it is to ignore portions of that bad data. The route was a familiar one to most of us. The same one that had been used for the Summer Handicap in fact. The only difference being that you only did half of it. The question was which half?

How is it possible to achieve something, yet not feel a sense of accomplishment until it’s recorded on a remote database or posted to an activity feed for all the world to see? We use the term "bad GPS data" to describe any circumstance where your GPS device records location (or other) data that does not accurately represent your activity. Bad GPS data can result in your activities on Strava having missing or extra distance recorded; segments not matched at allor recorded inaccurately;inaccurate elevation data;inaccurate achievements such as estimated best efforts;and more. I noticed that GoldenCheetah ( https://github.com/GoldenCheetah/GoldenCheetah/) supports file import and export of csv and fit files.In many cases, it will help to give your device a minute or two while you have a clear view of the sky to fully acquire a signal before beginning your ride or run. Scouring the web for .fit file tools, to inspect and fix them, initially returned no promising results. But in this moment as I am writing this up I just found out that there exists as fit-csv tool for converting .fit into .csv files ( https://developer.garmin.com/fit/fitcsvtool/windows/) which may have made the following steps easier. unknown_0 and unknown_1 looked like location data (which I censored it from here) but much more interestingly they were not given in floating point layout but rather were integer data points. The other fields where of not much interest; except for heartrate which turned out to be unknown_3 and temperature which was unknown_13 . Although primarily used for cycling and running, you can log many many different sports from rollerblading to skiing, and view your training timeline or a feed of workouts from all the athletes you follow. A lot of famous athletes are on Strava so this is a major excitement for fan boys and girls. You can create clubs for your friends to join and log mileage together, and join challenges from Strava and other brands that give you a discount coupon or similar incentive for completing them. You can give other athletes kudos (a thumbs up), comment on their efforts, and compete with them or yourself for the fastest time over various ‘segments’– pre-decided sections of path or road.

You can create a manual activity to account for the lost mileage - although this may not count toward Strava Challenges and won't match to any segments. More information on how this feature works can be found here. Look at how routine it’s become for us to document everything. I’ve seen dudes whip out their phones for selfies in the middle of a road race, and even social rides start with a chorus of chirps from Garmins and Wahoos. Every 60 seconds, according to Strava, another six cyclists sign up for the app. For Bokanev, the key is reminding ourselves that our own experience and memories are inherently more valuable than any digital product. “Those rides when you were just too tired to take out your phone and later you’re like, ‘Man, I should have taken a photo’? ” he says. “That shouldn’t take away from the actual experience, because in the end, who are you trying to impress?
