About this deal

So a lot of these cassettes were either taken by friends of ours, or we were giving them to our crew, or we used them at home to work on the lyrics or guitar solely. So we talked about this among the members of Triptykon, and I wanted to be sure everybody does it for the right reasons, and nobody’s against this. Over the course of little more than three years between 1984 and 1987, CELTIC FROST established themselves as one of the most important bands in extreme and experimental music of that era. During a recent Zoom chat, Celtic Frost co-founder/guitarist/vocalist Tom Gabriel Warrior discussed the epic box set, the disbanding of Celtic Frost, his current band Triptykon and his upcoming plans. Extreme metal band Celtic Frost, lead by guitarist Thomas Gabriel Fisher (aka Thomas G Warrior), were formed in the early 80s from the ashes of Hellhammer.

All the bonus tracks from the EPs are bonus tracks on the end of each album, I have checked mine and all tracks are there. t almost seems churlish to regard Celtic Frost as one of the great extreme metal bands, because they were so much more than that. Celtic Frost would take a more commercial turn with 1988’s Cold Lake, but the recordings that came before it remain legendary. It covers their Noise Records output from 1984’s ‘Morbid Tales’ to 1987’s ‘Into The Pandemonium’, charting an unpredictable course that saw them take in radical stylistic changes from avant-garde extreme metal to thrash metal and doom metal. There’s definitely a more atmospheric and experimental sound as the tracks progress, perhaps heading towards the sound that Fischer and Ain envisioned when they first sat down to plot Celtic Frost’s future one night in 1984. It should simply be a few people who played as friends in a very unusual band, paying homage to probably one of the most important members of this band, Martin Erich Ain. As long as we keep it to one or two concerts and name it what it is, namely a tribute in memoriam of Martin, then I think it’s legitimate. They have all the rights, but as usual with BMG they contacted me and they said do you want to be involved, we would love to have you on board.

The set encompasses their material from 1984 to 1987 and includes the band's classic albums alongside a handful of rarities and goodies, such as some releases back on vinyl for the first time in 30+ years. As such, this review is essentially my very first exposure to their music (aside from unwittingly hearing “Circle of the Tyrants” on Obituary’s Cause of Death and not knowing it was a cover).Due to personal difficulties, Martin was not in the band at that point, and so bass duties for the recording were carried out by session player Dominic Steiner.
