About this deal

The only way to figure this out is to consult the app, which isn’t convenient if you’re hoping to have Alexa or Google Assistant as your primary control method. You’ll also need to get used to re-filling the kettle between uses. Note that it’s good to get into a routine of adding just enough water for your next boil if you don’t want to waste energy, even if there’s a temptation to keep it topped up all the way. The companion app is used to set the correct temperature, with various pre-determined options for making tea, preparing baby milk, making rice flour, etc. You can also determine how long you want the kettle to maintain this temperature between 1-12 hours.

The iKettle 3.0 uses something called BlinkUP to transfer your wireless network details to the kettle’s base. On its underside is a sensor that can detect the flashes of your smartphone to determine the correct settings – a bit like fancy morse code. Simply tap your network settings into the app, after which it will ask you to hold your screen against the sensor on the base. The Appkettle looks more like a traditional kettle and will blend in well in your kitchen. Unlike the Smarter iKettle, this one has a water meter on the side which allows you to see the water level without opening it or using the app. At 1.7L it’s roughly the same size as the Smarter iKettle. It’s also available in a few different colours to match the rest of your kitchen including light grey, dark grey, stainless steel, and white. Aside from also being able to tell Alexa to turn off the kettle if you decide you don’t want it boiling, that’s it for your voice commands. I really wish the kettle could offer a readout of its capacity; otherwise, you need to keep jumping into the app – or, heaven forbid, get up and manually look inside the kettle to ensure there’s enough water for your next cuppa. Should you buy it?Finally, we have the Xiaomi Mi Kettle. This is very different from the iKettle in terms of how it works as it puts a huge emphasis on it’s keep-warm function. The kettle will boil your water to a set temperature and maintain that temperature for a set period of time.

If you’d like to be able to start preparing your morning cuppa from the comfort of your bed, the Smarter iKettle 3.0 is a feature-rich appliance with only a few annoyances. Design and setup Unfortunately, the kettle cannot be turned on or off from the app, this is a big disadvantage for me and is why I would always opt for the Smarter iKettle instead. Other returning features include its ability to keep water warm, help prepare baby formula and customise the water temperature for speciality teas, all controlled through the companion iOS and Android apps. Specifically, the incredibly incremental temperature controls – you can dial up or down by 1 degree – are largely pointless. Say you set it to 80ºC, the kettle will boil to that and give an audible beep to notify that it’s reached that temperature. But then the water will keep heating, typically to 7-8ºC higher than the target temperature. The kettle is quiet, too. I never found it distracting and my phone connection never failed me, so it delivered on the convenience I’d expect from a smart kettle. However, while the Bosch Sky kettle is less smart, it is far nicer to use thanks to the tactile base and visual appeal. It’s also cheaper, so unless you want something you can control remotely, I would suggest opting for the Sky kettle over the iKettle. About this review, and the reviewer Price-wise, the Bosch is also the better choice. It doesn’t come with smartphone compatibility though, so if you want the smartest of the smart and don’t care for manual controls, go for the Smarter iKettle 3rd Generation. Should you buy the Smarter iKettle 3rd Generation?
