About this deal

The story is in part inspired by Farr’s family history, based on his Great Aunt and Uncle’s escape from Nazi Germany - but reimagined in a fantasy dictatorship. The characters are beautifully drawn and very engaging, Rachel is a true heroine, always managing to find a way out of the tricky situations she finds herself in. Farr is a master storyteller as evidenced by his phenomenally successful screenwriting and directing for the stage.

Quero agradecer também à leya, por me ter permitido conhecer o mundo de Krasnia e estas duas crianças especiais. Letta is a Wordsmith: responsible for handing out words to people who need them, she has never questioned why language is rationed. And then those characters that brought others back and now someone else wants to live forever and oh no that can't happen. The pacing was perfect, I could easily keep up and it wasn't as predictable, which I was pleasantly surprised to learn. Both Rachel and Robert face countless challenges and must rely on their courage, intelligence and charm to stay one step ahead of their enemies. Did you feel very engaged when you were writing their story, as that is suggested by the authorial voice?

And then, of course, there is the aspect of a library and a book, and if you're a bookworm, which I believe most of you reading this are, how could you not be interested in a bookish, magical, adventure. Both children are determined to fulfil the mission passed to them by their father and will do whatever is necessary to bring down the evil Malstain. Farr’s beautifully crafted, thought-provoking story isn’t an easy-breezy read, but Farr is intimately acquainted with its stakes: The Book of Stolen Dreams was inspired by his own German Jewish family’s escape from Nazi Germany between 1935 and 1938.Seeing characters killed off and tortured added to the stakes of this adventure story, I just found the middle quite slow. I love the villain in the book, Charles Malstain, as his character makes you feel scared for the children and wondering what will happen if he catches them.

David Farr has squirreled inspiration from his real-life German Jewish ancestors into the fictional realm of Krasnia, ruled by a cruel, child-hating autocrat. As his omniscient narrator observes with the mix of hard-won acceptance, hope and love for humanity that echoes throughout The Book of Stolen Dreams, 'Such is life, my friend.packs in plenty of cats and poo jokes, but also readable breakdowns of not just the autism spectrum but those of gender and sexuality as well. The Book of Stolen Dreams is the first book in the Stolen Dreams adventure series and was an amazing, adventure packed read from cover to cover. Whatever I'm writing, I do 'see' visually first and then I try and describe this as best as I can, whether it's through prose or dialogue. This has the vibes of classic kids literature, set in a fantastical world, where there are truly evil vill The Book of Stolen Dreams offers a tense and thrilling adventure, but one in which Farr allows the youngest characters to win the day - providing a hope-filled reminder that good can triumph over tyranny in a million small, everyday ways.

In particular, I think this boon would suit readers who have enjoyed Sophie Anderson and Katherine Rundell. My second was sitting in a pub in Hampstead convincing John le Carré to allow me to update his 1990's novel The Night Manager to the Arab Spring and set the BBC TV series in that world.I think getting completely swept up in Rachel throughout the story and discovering what happened to her brother instead of knowing what is going on before her would have jammed up the suspense and engagement. Porque mira en los juegos del hambre aún tienen que luchar contra gente de su edad pero es que estos niños son unos cracks que escapan constantemente de soldados y gente entrenada… Y encima te caen muy bien enseguida. Rachel and Robert live in a dictatorship in Brava that makes life very drab and humdrum – as well as very dangerous. This is evident in the confidence with which he controls all the elements in this complex, engrossing fantasy thriller – his first novel for a child audience.
