About this deal

American album certifications – Kenny Chesney – Be as You Are". Recording Industry Association of America.

Each chapter centers on one or a few questions that are common in Advaita and nondualism, asked by the people who sat with him, and Ramana gives the answer. Ramana's method of self inquiry to dissolve the belief of separation from the Self, his insistence that there is a direct path to awakening and that enlightenment can be attained by anyone, is in strong focus. This practice of self-attention or awareness of the ‘I’-thought is a gentle technique which bypasses the usual repressive methods of controlling the mind. It is not an exercise in concentration, nor does it aim at suppressing thoughts; it merely invokes awareness of the source from which the mind springs. The method and goal of self-enquiry is to abide in the source of the mind and to be aware of what one really is by withdrawing attention and interest from what one is not. In the early stages effort in the form of transferring attention from the thoughts to the thinker is essential, but once awareness of the ‘I’-feeling has been firmly established, further effort is counter-productive. From then on it is more a process of being than doing, of effortless being rather than an effort to be.This is chapter five of Be As You Are . The notes and sources for the material used can be found in the print edition. The introductory remarks are by the editor, David Godman. This book is regarded by many as the ultimate work in modern Advaita and nondualism, and rightfully so. Sri Ramana Maharshi was a sage's sage, as well as everyone's sage, and his words have inspired a whole generation of western awakened. Ramana puts everything in clear and simple words, and Hindu terms and Sanskrit words are also explained. There is no need to be familiar with Hindu scripture before reading this book. Sri Ramana’s central teaching is that the jnani must actively inquire about the nature of the true self (a practice called atma-vichara, or self-inquiry.) As such, the book is organized as a guide to building a practice of self-inquiry.

Editorial Reviews

Bhagavan: That is the real Self, the import of ‘I’. It is not the ego. It is the Supreme Being itself. Be as You Are (Songs from an Old Blue Chair) is the ninth studio album by American country music singer Kenny Chesney, released on January 25, 2005. The album debuted at number one album on the US Billboard 200 chart. In this book, Sri Ramana Maharshi presents a clear path and a workable plan -- a "System of Enquiry" as he calls it -- for overcoming anxiety, stilling the mind, finding eternal internal peace and contentment, and discovering your true Self -- or as he might put it better, "Being" Your Self. I was very impressed with Ramana Maharshi. As with many abstruse spiritual texts, they refer to mental states that are rarefied and experiential. It is not really possible to truly grasp what he is talking about unless one has experienced the same strange states as he, a bit like hearing a description of the ocean without ever actually having seen it, smelt it, felt the enormity of it. heard this song on the radio 7 freaking times just found it today ahhhh love it 2016-09-09T23:36:17Z Comment by lexi O.

As with so many spiritual texts, I am reading the words of these special individuals who have attained a very unique state of being and so I don't really get it on any deep level. This requires a certain amount of faith on my part, faith that they really know what they're talking about. I certainly have faith in Ramana Maharshi though. His answers to every question, despite being somewhat disconnected from normal human experience, seem to be correct; truthful on a very fundamental level and there is so much consistency in all his answers. So much so that after having read the first quarter of the book, you have pretty much already seen all he has to offer. His philosophy is almost impossible to fathom and yet so elegantly simple. Every question is confounded with answers along the lines of "yes, this is an interesting question, but if you were to practice the method that I have already taught you then you would immediately see that your question and all other questions are invalid". It could be somewhat infuriating and it might seem a bit bogus but, like i say, i have faith in the dude. This encapsulates so many religions without all the dogma and shows the true law of the universe of which we are part, as Sri maharshi states 'Just as the sun cannot be seen in a densely clouded sky, so one's own Self cannot be seen in a mind-sky which is darkened by a dense cloud of thoughts.'Be As You Are (Songs From an Old Blue Chair) (Media notes). Kenny Chesney. BNA Records. 2004. BNA82876-61530-2. {{ cite AV media notes}}: CS1 maint: others in cite AV media (notes) ( link) The book’s 21 chapters are divided among six parts. The first part investigates the self as Sri Ramana refers to it. This isn’t the individual self that one is normally referring to in common speech. Part II is entitled “Inquiry and Surrender” and three out of the four chapters, herein, discuss the process of self-inquiry. Three chapters may sound like a lot, but this practice really is the core of jnana yoga. These chapters not only explain how self-inquiry is done and what it’s supposed to achieve, they also contrast the practice with others that bear a resemblance to atma-vichara, such as reciting “Who am I?” as a mantra, as well as, neti-neti -- an exercise in negation in which one considers all the things that aren’t the self (e.g. “I am not my body.” “I am not this thought,” etc.) Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly, and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love – for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you from misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labours and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.” I have read literally hundreds of books hitherto to help me achieve these goals, and this book, in my humble opinion, is head and shoulders above the rest, in its directness, simplicity, and effectveness. He himself, without false modesty, claims in this book that the "atma vichara" approach that he shares is the one plan that will help a practitioner achieve these goals more than any other. Lets say the first quarter of the book is the hardest part as this is the basis of the book, you must have a basic grasp of the concept of the 'I' 'true self' and 'ego' before proceeding. This isn't a book you can just dip into willy nilly, it must be read methodically and digested to some degree before proceeding. If you get past the first quarter and into the second quarter this is when it really opens your eyes and continues in this vain for the remainder of the book.
