At the Grey Havens (Mithlond), on the Gulf of Lune, Cirdan built the ships in which the Elves departed from Middle-earth to Valinor. [T 3] [5] Misty Mountains [ edit ] The first adaptation to be shown was The Hobbit in 1977, made by Rankin-Bass studios. This was initially shown on United States television. In Letter 202 to Christopher Tolkien, Tolkien set out his policy regarding film adaptations of his works: "Art or Cash". He sold the film rights for The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings to United Artists in 1969 after being faced with a sudden tax bill. The rights are currently in the hands of Middle-earth Enterprises, which has no relation to the Tolkien Estate, which retains film rights to The Silmarillion and other works published since 1969.

This was the moment where I actually was the first time thinking about creating something like Arda Maps. The history of Middle-earth is divided into three time periods, known as the Days before days, Years of the Trees, and Years of the Sun; the last is typically sub-divided further into four Ages. He did this through a Vision, to which the Ainur was so moved that they felt an irresistible urge to encounter the events in it. Because of this, Iluvatar formed Ea, the universe, where the Ainur went to experience directly the events they have seen in the Vision. However, they went to Ea at the beginning of time, so they found it without form. These " ages of the star" were shapeless, and so the Ainur labored tirelessly to give them meaning and to fill the universe with all things far beyond what Men can ever reach. After a while, Iluvatar created Arda, where Men, Elves, and the Children of Iluvatar dwelt. Valar is the fifteen most formidable Ainur, with Melkor being the most fearsome one, but the leader of the Valar was Manwe.Carpenter 1981, #137 to Rayner Unwin, 11 April 1953; #139 to Rayner Unwin, 8 August 1953; #141 to Allen & Unwin, 9 October 1953; #144 to Naomi Mitchison, 25 April 1954; #160 to Rayner Unwin, 6 March 1955; #161 to Rayner Unwin, 18 April 1955 Stories and essays related to the Silmarillion and Lord of the Rings, but many were never completed. Further information: Tolkien's influences Classical, medieval, and recent influences on the geography of Middle-earth. All locations are approximate. [28] Tolkien borrowed the Arthurian place-name Brocéliande for an early version of Beleriand. [29] 1868 illustration by Gustave Doré The Atlas of Middle-earth provides many detailed maps of the lands described in Tolkien's books. The maps are treated as if they are of real landscapes, drawn according to the rules of a real atlas. For each area the history of the land is taken into account, as well as geography on a larger scale; from there maps are drawn. [7] Fonstad's discussion includes suggestions as to the geology that could explain various formations, and points that are contradictory between multiple accounts. Fonstad explains in the atlas, and in her article about it, how she came to decide on such matters. For example, she compares the western Emyn Muil with its two ridges to the Weald with its pair of inward-facing downs (an anticline). [2]

The end of the Third Age marked the end of the dominion of the Elves and the beginning of the dominion of Men. As the Fourth Age began, many of the Elves who had lingered in Middle-earth left for Valinor, never to return; those who remained behind would "fade" and diminish. The Dwarves eventually dwindled away as well. The Dwarves eventually returned to and resettled Moria. Peace was restored between Gondor and the lands to the south and east. Eventually, the tales of the earlier Ages became legends, the truth behind them forgotten. Gaslin, Glenn (21 November 2001). "Ralph Bakshi's unfairly maligned Lord of the Rings". Slate .
