None of the characters were likable, I found Pru particularly irritating and the relationship she had with her children was bizarre! I found this book really disappointing. My first impressions were that this was going to be a dark comedy about gate-crashing funerals. As the book progressed I began to think it might be a thriller. Having finished the book I am still not sure which genre the author was going for! Moseley, Rachel (2002). Growing up with Audrey Hepburn: text, audience, resonance. Our visual system is supposed to throw away information about the illuminant and extract information about the actual reflectance ... but I've studied individual differences in colour vision for 30 years, and this is one of the biggest individual differences I've ever seen. Pru is on her own. But then, so are plenty of other people. And while the loneliness can be overwhelming, surely she'll find a party somewhere? Brainard, DH; Hulbert, A (2015). "Colour Vision: Understanding #TheDress". An experts lesson from the dress". Slate. 2 March 2015. Archived from the original on 20 April 2018 . Retrieved 6 March 2015. Overall, a highly entertaining, very well written novel with plenty of touches of originality. It’s enjoyable from start to finish.

Lastly: characterisation. I was disappointed to find the characters read as flat stereotypes for me. For example, there were lines thrown in that were racist or transphobic, with the sole purpose of trying to create a “typical” inappropriate and elderly character. This felt like a lazy injustice and I wish the characters had been developed beyond such problematic tropes. I also think I’m not alone in saying that Moggach’s writing seems confused and a bit all over the shop! I cannot for the life of me confine this book to a genre. A fellow book clubber described it as a book of two halves and I’m inclined to agree! There’s the beginning which is a mix of dark humour and seduction — it’s almost a romance! Then the latter: which is definitely more along the lines of a thriller, with even more seduction sprinkled in.
