About this deal

Overall, we feel the Kill Team meta was pretty healthy in May, with a good variety of teams doing well. Going forward, we will keep our finger on the pulse and monitor things closely in Q3. Ranged Specialists – Novitiates do not have dedicated Gunner operatives like most human equivalent teams, and have a single special weapon that does not come with an Rng ⬟ or less restriction. This weakness can be offset by the use of their ploys, and other abilities, but can be a liability on more open boards. The last three slots I'm hung up on. Obviously the duelist isn't amazing, the preceptor and hospitallar give amazing buffs but open you up to being multi charged and blast(I know each match is different and they will do better in more shooting ones). While the Exactor and Penitent seem almost required to take together and I think I want to take them but not entirely sure yet. Divine Shield (2 Faith Points) – The defensive version of Guiding Light. Retain a failed save as a normal save. From a purely mathematical perspective this is more useful than its offensive counterpart. The defense die pools of your average operative is automatically smaller than the die pools of your average ranged weapon as are the odds of success on individual die. Being able to automatically pass a save to prevent an operative from dying can swing a game. Chaplet Ecclesiaticus (2 EP)–Each time the model is activated, roll a dice. On a 6 you get an additional +1 to your APL. This is 2EP, note that Bosspole for the Kommandos, which just gives you an extra APL on your Nob, is 3EP. I don’t think this is worth it.

The model just has an autopistol, but it’s got a solid ability and unique action. Novitiate Hospitaller Another interesting mix, with two Talons of the Emperor teams, Void Dancers, Intercessors, Legionnaires, Navy Breachers, and two Blooded teams. Again, a healthy mix that offers more variety. Ploys – Novitiates has a combo of ploys that give all their autopistols infinite range and change them to damage 3/4. It may cost 2CP to pull off this combo but it does largely solve their firepower problem for a turn. Unique actions are actions detailed on an operative’s datacard that only they can perform, such as the Dakka Dash action found on the example datacard. It’s a trainee murder nun with a flamethrower and dakka dash. Ministorum flamers are 5 dice, 2+, 2/3 damage, six inch range, Torrent and Inferno 1, so they’re a bit better than normal flamers. You can take two in a team, and I would advise you do. These are great for clearing out hordes, have a fifteen inch threat bubble built into them, and can chip away at tougher enemies as well, and there is a tactical ploy to make them even better. Free actions can only be performed when another rule specifies. Each time an operative would perform a free action, the following rules apply. Don’t forget, Kill Team is a roster-based game – you select operatives from an extended list that are most suited for the mission, terrain, where your drop zone is, and your opponent’s faction. The Novitiates have plenty of different options, and it’s worth getting a good understanding of all the different roles they fill.

A Novitiate Superior with +1APL from the Dialogus can charge, fight with a power weapon, and shoot with a plasma pistol, then chain activate one of the aforementioned operatives with Lead By Example. This is a combo with frightening damage potential! Healing – Both a medic model and an Act of Faith that can heal injured models means you’re a bit more resilient than you look. Novitiates flame weapons come with a special weapon trait unique to their team. If a player retains a critical hit with a weapon that has the Inferno X trait the target gains an a number of Inferno tokens equal to the X value. At the end of the Turning Point roll a D6 for each Inferno token, on a 4+ the target receives 1 Mortal Wound, and the token is removed regardless of the result.Sainted Reliquae (2 EP)– Each time the operative strikes with a critical hit, gain a Faith point. So put it on a model with either a lot of dice, or lethal 5+. The Duellist is a good choice.

On the whole, the current Kill Team meta is very healthy, with solid balance that leads to 13-15 out of 21 factions currently showing competitive strength. The Tier List Glorious Hymnal costs an AP, but gives a six inch bubble around the Preceptor where Novitiates can reroll 1s and 2s when they fight. This makes hitting with weapons like eviscerators much more likely, and means Militants with Novitiate Blades can reroll all their misses unless they’re injured and miss on 3s, in which case they still have Balance and can reroll a single dice. Novitiate Dialogus The militants, being your standard non-specialist, can be taken up to nine times, while the Purgatus may be taken twice. All other specialists are restricted to once per Kill Team. Abilities Acts of Faith Legionnaires – Many of the same issues one finds when going up against Intercessors, but leaning more towards melee specialists such as the Shriv-Talon or Champion that can easily outclass yours in combat. Saving your Faith points for Vengeful Strike can be the difference between winning or losing when up against ploys like Mutagenic Flesh . Otherwise save ploys such as Sanctified Rounds or Burning Wrath against non-Nurgle operatives. C The penitent is a better version of the Penitent in the Compendium list. She has an autopistol, giving her some ranged ability, and an eviscerator with 4 dice, 4+ to hit, 5/6 Brutal and Reap 2. Reap is situational and dependent on enemy models being close to each other, but if you can multi charge this model rewards you for it, as Absolution Through Destruction means that for 1AP you get two Fight actions together. This means you can, with reasonable dice, chainsaw your way through a couple of guard equivalents in your activation, or chop up a marine equivalent. To make your first Fight action even more likely to succeed, Zealous Rage means that in your first Fight action of the turn you can reroll any or all of your dice, to get as many hits and crits as possible. As has become the pattern for these boxes, there’s two Kill Teams in the box, plus Codex: Nachmund detailing the new rules for playing them. We’ll have more detailed rules coverage later today, but it works pretty much as you’d expect, with new dataslates, Spec Ops, Battle Honours and the like for playing your chosen team. Novitiate Militants are Battle Sisters in training. Equipped with Autoguns, Autopistols, and Swords. [7b]

The A+ and A tiers cover the majority of the game’s non-Compendium factions and most of these have been in a top 8 recently. Winning with these factions is very possible. During that activation, a friendly NOVITIATE operative with the Staunch specialism performed a mission action. Glare of Condemnation: Each time an enemy operative would perform a psychic action, if it is within of one or more friendly operatives with this Battle Honour, 1 additional AP must be subtracted to perform that action.

Tac Ops

Secure Vantage – A wildly swingy Tac Op as terrain placement can make it impossible. It is also worth noting that Novitiates don’t come with the ability to Fly or access any equipment such as Climbing Ropes that can make it easier for operatives to get on top of vantage points. If you have to use this Tac Op ensure you have your Pronatus on hand. D to C depending on vantage point presence
