The Stranger Times by CK McDonnell review — a supernatural

There are dark forces at work in our world (and in Manchester in particular), so thank God The Stranger Times is on hand to report them . A weekly newspaper that is dedicated to the wonderful and the weird (but mainly the weird), and it’s the go-to publication for the inexplicable and unexplained.Tanta works as a trainee agent for the InTech company, and her first assignment is to lead a team into an unaffiliated zone to retrieve stolen software files. What they discover leads to a shocking realisation: some of the stories they'd previously dismissed as nonsense are in fact terrifyingly real. Homicidal cherubs, Reliant Robins, irate starlings, hijacked ghosts, floating statues, and quite possibly several deeply sinister conspiracies. Assistant Editor Hannah has come back from getting messily divorced to discover that someone is trying to kidnap a member of their staff and while editor Vincent Banecroft would be delighted to see the back of any of his team, he doesn’t like people touching his stuff – it’s the principle of the thing. His debut novel, A Man With One of Those Faces – a darkly comic crime novel – was published in 2016 and spawned The Dublin Trilogy books and the spin-off McGarry Stateside series.

The Stranger Times Love Will Tear Us Apart - Project 1 - The Stranger Times

There are dark forces at work in our world so thank goodness “The Stranger Times” is on hand to report on them. McDonnell does a great job of differentiating characters from each other with just a line or two of description, making sure you never forget them. After investigating a series of strange deaths, Hannah and her colleagues learn that the tall stories they trade in might have some basis in fact, and soon find themselves on the receiving end of malign forces. Based in a derelict Mancunian church, the paper covers wacky supernatural, occult and bizarre stories – think the Fortean Times run on a shoestring. And certainly not the people of Manchester, since there’s nothing more irksome than getting murdered by some allegory run amok.

At the end of the first novel, set in a bleak, ravaged 2045 where humankind sought refuge in a virtual world known as OASIS, teenager Wade Watts won the ultimate virtual reality supergame and inherited the fortune of OASIS creator James Halliday. The Stranger Times and This Charming Man shortlisted for a 'Dead Good Reader Award' - the 'The New Kid on the Block Award for Best New Series'! Fleeing a failed marriage, university dropout Hannah Willis is taken on by the paper – and promoted to assistant editor within two hours of landing the job. McDonnell lives in Manchester and spends most of his days in an office in his back garden, with only his dog and his imagination for company. With Banecroft being distracted, the shock resignation of Hannah Willis, assistant editor, could not have come at a worse time.
