About this deal

The current sensors in Google's connected-home devices and services generally fall into the following categories:

Ultrasonic sensors use sound waves to measure distance to an object and can be used to detect when someone is near a device. See what's happening near the camera. Also used to detect certain types of activity, so you can get an alert when a person or motion is detected near the camera. Depending on the camera model, where you live and whether you have a Nest Aware subscription, the camera can be used to identify a face that you’ve told it to recognise and send an alert when it recognises someone you know or a strangerCamera events can be used to start home automations.

On the Nest app: Tap on the Thermostat circle > Tap on the Settings cog in the top right corner of the screen > Scroll down to Eco Temperatures in the Options section > Choose the temperature you want your house to be at when Eco Mode is on.

If you have a zoned system with multiple thermostats, you can set these thermostats to different temperatures. You can use up to 6 Nest Temperature Sensors for each thermostat. Outside of the zone the thermostat is controlling, if you have a system with 2 or more thermostats: you can use the app to reassign the thermostat your sensor is connected to. Measures ambient room light with Sleep Sensing to help you understand sleep environmental disturbances. Emits ultrasonic pulses from the speaker to detect proximity of a user for a more responsive and proactive device experience, such as triggering the display of media or device controls on the device.

Types of sensors, what they measure and examples of uses

I have read about the battery operated Nest temperature sensors that can send the temp in other parts of the house to the system Hear what's happening near the camera. Also used to detect certain types of sounds so that you can get an alert when a person or motion is detected near the camera. The microphone is also used for the Talk and listen feature that lets you talk to anyone near the camera. Nest Cam IQ Indoor also allows you to talk to the Google Assistant (if you have enabled that feature). Probably not. In fact it will probably cost a little more to heat and cool your home when you use one. Remote Temperature Sensors are designed to keep you comfortable in the room they are in, which means they might have to run the heating and cooling system a little more often.

Bluetooth can be used for setup and to detect the presence of other Bluetooth-enabled devices. It can also be used to stream audio from one device to another. Inefficient heating or cooling systems can also cause larger temperature differences between rooms. For instance, rooms that are further away from your system can sometimes be warmer or cooler than the rest of your home. Nope! The Nest Temperature Sensor connects to your Nest using Bluetooth and has a range up to 15 meters (about 50 feet). That measurement is in a straight line that can go through walls or floors so you'll probably be good unless you have a very large house. Sometimes house wiring can monkey with Bluetooth and shorten its range, but those issues are relatively rare.
