In the story, Annie and Noah are Jonathan's younger siblings while in the episode, they are new friends finishing the game. Each player has two character pawns--only one of which they may chose to move on each turn. They move as far as is permitted by the amount shown on their die roll. Also on each turn, the tomb die is rolled, and one of the tombs is moved. This tomb movement alters the playing field by changing what some of the spaces on the game board represent. In this way, a player might land on a square that is safe, but after a tomb is shifted--they suddenly find that they are left "paralyzed with fear." Jonathan unfolds the board and proceeds to explain the rules: each person rolls the dice, and the objective is to make it through the haunted house and find the hidden ghost. Jonathan rolls first and lands on a space reading, "YOU HEAR CREAKING FOOTSTEPS ON THE STAIRS". Almost immediately, creaking sounds can be heard. The next event reads: "WIND RATTLES THE WINDOWS", and that too seems to come to life. Nadine tries to convince them it's simply coincidental, but the children begin to fear there could be a ghost in the house. Following the success of Stine's young adult horror novels, the co- founder of Parachute Press (the company that developed the series), [26] Joan Waricha, persuaded him to write scary books for younger children. [27] Stine says the name for the book series came to him after he saw a TV station's ad in TV Guide that stated "It’s goosebumps week on Channel 11". [28] [29] He originally signed a six-book deal with the publisher Scholastic, [30] but went on to write 62 books in the original series, the first book being Welcome to Dead House, released in July 1992. The series was originally aimed at girls, but both boys and girls enjoyed the series equally with half of Stine's fan mail being sent from boys. [15] The cover illustrations for this series was done primarily by Tim Jacobus. [31] Thirty-two of the books from the original series were later re-released with new artwork under the Classic Goosebumps rename.
