About this deal

The outcome there was to set the tone for the remainder of the war, affect international opinion, and morale and determination of both armies. Her role for most of the time was that of an expendable escort and she became the only ship to survive an Exocet hit.

Mike Norman and Michael Jones's account doesn;t bring anything new to the history, but does put it into a different and very interesting perspective as they use first-hand accounts of the men who were stunned into fighting to defend themselves from the sudden Argentine invading forces. Downplayed by the British top brass as more of a whimsical view on the war, “The Razor’s Edge” gained vast traction amongst those more interested in the proverbial ‘reason why’ and audiences could count upon Hugh Bicheno’s often-caustic dealings with those responsible for the war to produce a full picture of what later became known as ‘The Whitehall War.Glimpses of the Falklands War has been added as a special edition to the Glimpses of War series in honour of the 40th anniversary of the Falklands War. All the Exocet attacks on the Battle Group are included, culminating with the desperate fight to save the ship, which came perilously close to sinking. In this book Curtis, describes his gruelling experiences in the Falklands and some of his SAS operations. I thoroughly enjoyed this and it brought back vivid memories of when I was Fifteen reading the newspapers and watching tv coverage.

As Julian Thompson makes plain in this account, the lions' share of the fighting on land fell to 3 Commando Brigade. The Malvinas for the Argentines are a kind of religion, but this is another matter, and certainly the huge number (for the few days that the war actually lasted) of fallen, often only conscript boys and with little training, which the South American forces had, plays a part in the matter. Interesting relics of colonialism, even in the 1980s, such as the repetitive mention of "Chinese laundrymen".The captain, guessing his intentions, drolly asked: "Perhaps you would like me to sail up and down a bit?

It's obvious that Middlebrook partially intended this book to memorialize individual British soldiers, naval personnel and distinguished units engaged in the conflict.

I commend the book to those interested in gaining a more complete understanding of the Falklands campaign and to those who wish to gain a better understanding of leadership and courage in war at the tactical level. It reads like a thriller and moves at a fast pace through the anticipation of events and dealing with the attack.

At the time, many Britons saw it as a tragic absurdity - thousands of men sent overseas for a tiny relic of empire - but the British victory over the Argentinians not only confirmed the quality of British arms but also boosted the political fortunes of Thatcher's Conservative government. The Argentines were largely based in Port Stanley and Goose Green on East Falkland and Port Howard and Fox Bay on West Falklands. Alan, one of our blind veterans and trustees, was just 17 when he went to face the Argentines with his fellow Royal Marines. In this accomplished and engaging book, Mercau provides a penetrating analysis of the association between the Falkland Islands and empire. My subject is no picture book saint but a very human priest, wracked by doubt, who struggles to be a true witness of his faith in challenging circumstances. With maps, never before seen photographs (including the destroyed armoured vehicles, since found, which were always denied) and full lists of both sides involved, The First Casualty takes the entire Falklands War at a glance and shows us that, as with its forebears above, the first casualty of war really is the truth. If you're interested in what happened and why, there's no better source than the horse's mouth: Admiral Sandy Woodward's One Hundred Days. Mike Norman and Michael Jones’s dramatic account draws upon Norman’s vivid recollections, the log book and action reports of the defence of Government House and Stanley, the testimony of Marines under Mike Norman’s command and recently released government archives.
