About this deal

And then get your children to start cutting the planks - you could calculate how much wider the planks have to be amidships, compared to at the ends (using a ratio of the frame section girths), so that all of the planks are full length. An engaging Viking activity for your lessons, this Viking longboat template is a perfect craft activity to introduce to your children. Other resources on Viking longboats

The hull of a Viking longship was made from planks of timber, usually oak. These strips were overlayed and nailed together in a method known as the clinker method. This made the hull very strong. To make the hull watertight, tar was mixed with materials such as wool, moss or animal hair and these were pressed into any spaces between the planks. The hull was very shallow. This allowed Viking longships to travel close to beaches or into shallow rivers sometimes no more than a metre deep. I'm now tempted as we're getting more used to the Cricut, to try again and also see if I can get the cutter to make holes so I can stitch it together rather than tape it. The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships. In the oldest Viking stories, known as sagas, the warriors would travel incredible distances in their boats and used chants to keep up morale when the rain and wind were beating down on them. Often, their Viking sailing chants would be used to tell stories about their favourite battles or adventures and to tell the stories of their gods as well as how their world was created.

Oars: Longships had between 24 and 50 oars, depending on their size. They could be pulled inside through the oar-port in shallow waters.Edit - just an additional thought - have a look at the Norwegian Hardanger Faerings designed by Iain Oughtred - On board were a series of small rowing boats which meant that the Vikings could get to shore and explore without risking damage to the bigger ship. Did you know… Longships were long elegant craft used by The Vikings to cross the North Sea, first on raiding missions and later to explore and settle in Engand, Ireland, Iceland and beyond. They were a wooden construction with a shallow Draft which meant they could be rowed up shallow rivers as well as across the sea, powered by oars and their large square woollen sail. They could also land on beaches and were light enough to be carried when necessary and tipped upside down to use as a temporary shelter.

Use this model to support learning about Vikings alongside other Twinkl resources and discover a new level of engagement. One of the most famous Viking sailing chants was carved into a piece of wood during the 14th century. The carving consists of the first few bars of the song and was known as "I Dreamt Me A Dream". Facts about Longships So I converted flo-mo's design to SVG - cleaned it up, and set it to cut on the Cricut*, and the card failed to cut fully and delaminated when peeling off the cutting mat. The sagas were a set of stories, told orally, that documented the history of Viking warriors and the acts of the gods and great Viking kings and queens. Vikings would tell these stories during feasts, raids, and sailing trips. Thanks to archaeology and written accounts from people who encountered the Vikings, we have discovered more about Viking sailing chants and music through their poetry. Though, The Vikings themselves never wrote down their music. For other 3D and AR models to support your teaching on Vikings, take a look at the History collection. What is a Viking Longship? The model for the Sea Stallion is an archaeological find, the Viking ship Skuldelev 2, that was excavated in 1962. It was originally built by Scandinavians in Dublin in the year 1042 but ended its life after many years service as a part of the barrier constructed 15 km north of Roskilde, the royal seat of Denmark at that time. Thanks to decades of research it has been possible to reconstruct both the original appearance of the ships and the methods that were employed by the shipbuilders in Dublin almost a thousand years ago. Singing and playing music, in ways we have come to know as Viking sailing chants, were very important in the history of the Viking people. They sang songs and played music when they were happy, when they were sad and when they wanted to celebrate all sorts of things in everyday life. Importantly, singing and chanting were key parts of managing their journeys around the world on their longships. Having made that and understood the concept she wanted to do a more solid version and make it into a "longship".
