About this deal

On the other hand, this 16Core i9 implementation is no match for other Intel or AMD current platforms. For what is worth, the Ryzen 9 6900HX Legion 7 should also score around 2400 points in this test, so nowhere close to the Intel HX models. A comparison between the Ryzen 9 6900HX and the Core i9-12900H processor si available here. So the following article is going to be a little lighter than what I normally do. It’s going to refer to the Legion 7i article a lot, and will be mostly a “what’s different” approach rather than a full review. Our review unit is the highest-specced configuration with the Intel i9-12900HX processors and RTX 3080Ti graphics, one of the most powerful laptop configurations available in stores right now. However, we’ll also touch on the better-value i7 + RTX 3070Ti model in the article down below, as that’s what most potential buyers should be looking at, given the i9 + 3080Ti goes for 4K USD/EUR, at least for the time being. Battlefield V, Cyberpunk, Doom, Witcher 3 – recorded with Fraps/in-game FPS counter in campaign mode;

The Lenovo Legion 7i comes with a full per-key RGB keyboard complete with a number pad, a large touchpad and Lenovo style keycaps. It doesn’t quite live up to what you’ll find on most ThinkPads, but you can still see Lenovo’s expertise with keyboards in play here. We need to push for same stuff for Legion for sure. I could never imagine myself tearing my new laptop apart so fast to pull out those flex cables for side and vents LEDs, i totally cant wrap my head around the fact that we have no control in BIOS over that crap show and have to jump through the hoops. Maybe you can use this info in some of your articles to catch some of Lenovo attention, you guys are big and one of the best on review scene, it can make good circles on the water for em to hear and fix it finally. Update2: 2022 updates of the Lenovo Legion 7 series are available now, in both Intel and AMD variants. Our full review of the 2022 Legion 7i series is available here. Specs sheet as reviewed– Lenovo Legion 7i 2021 The 16in 2,560 x 1,660 IPS panel is a joy to look at. Bright and pin-sharp, it’s also impressively colour accurate and abundantly colourful. Brightness maxes out at a very respectable 490cd/m², while the contrast ratio is a solid 1,208:1. Storage speed proved to be good rather than great, with the Samsung SSD returning sequential read and write speeds of 3,126MB/s and 2,648MB/s respectively. The Asus M16 has it well beaten, recording speeds of 5,536 and 4,325MB/s, though the Legion 7’s speeds are still in line with other high-spec machines we’ve reviewed recently.The Legion 7i is preinstalled with Lenovo Vantage. The software is used for a number of different things, but one of the uses is to adjust the CPU/GPU settings. That aside, there are also a few other laptops you could consider in the performance space, such as the Asus ROG Scar units or the MSI Raiders at the highest-tier 3080Ti specs, or the excellent-value Lenovo Legion 5i Pro series at the 3070Ti level. Some support guy posted a KBD firmware update to overwrite default pride profile with plain blue and it worked well. As far as the Performance mode results go, I’ll go out on a limb and just call it a tie. Sure, there are slight differences, but keep in mind that these are actual gaming tests and while my scenarios are similar, it’s not an exact science like the synthetic benchmarks are. All in all, the 2022 Legion 7i is an excellent performer and definitely a step-up from the previous 2021 generations. The culprit are the high CPU thermals in sustained loads, as well as to some extent the fact that this design is not as CPU-powerful as other Intel HX models from other brands.

W (~1 h 22 min of use)– Gaming – Wither 3, Maximum Performance Mode, 60fps cap, screen at 50%, Wi-Fi ON.The laptop is thermally limited on Performance mode, and then aggressively power capped on the other modes, so there’s no proper middle-ground profile for those interested in running sustained CPU loads at average temperatures. You’ll have to go with the Performance mode for any serious work, but that means you’ll have to accept the high CPU temperatures, which isn’t ideal. I surely recommend opting for some sort of stand or cooling pad while running demanding CPU loads on this laptop. The Lenovo Legion 7i had a battery life of about 5 hours on our in-house battery test, which is within expectations for a gaming laptop with these kinds of specs. For instance, the Alienware x17 is another Intel Core i9/RTX 3080 laptop that actually had about a half hour less battery life on the same test. That said, we do occasionally see exceptions, such as the 5:58 battery life we saw on the AMD-powered Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 15 SE. While we got those numbers with just one of that laptop’s two displays turned on, the Zephyrus only had 5 fewer minutes of battery life than the Legion when we tested it again with both displays running. For starters, let’s look at how the CPU handles demanding sustained loads in the Cinebench R15 loop test. It actually delivers and stabilizes on those exact PL1 settings above on each of the profiles. Note that changing out the RAM had a negligible effect on the benchmarks, similar to the difference that was made on the Intel version. I originally thought that perhaps the Ryzen CPUs were affected by the cheaper RAM modules, but it appears that’s not the case. I do have a feeling that the 16GB models (2x 8GB) will suffer a decrease in performance, though, similar to what I experienced in the Legion 5 Pro. While the RAM that comes preinstalled on the Legion 7 appears to be the cheaper kind, like I saw in the Legion 5 Pro, I didn’t see as much of a performance difference like I did with the 8GB modules. This could be because it’s 16GB modules, or perhaps it’s because Intel is less reliant on RAM than AMD. Regardless, the default RAM is just fine to me. Gaming on the Lenovo Legion 7

This mode is impressive as well, with fan noise of up to 40 dB. The GPU scores are within 80% of what the platform delivers on Performance, but the CPU is significantly limited by the aggressive TDP cap of just 25W, and that’s shown in the scores.

Powering the machine is a 3.3-GHz AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX 8-core CPU coupled with 16GB of RAM, the perfect combo for multi-tasking and heavy programs. Nvidia's powerful GeForce RTX 3080 GPU handles the demanding graphics of today's top AAA titles. Meanwhile, a high capacity 1TB NVMe TLC SSD affords you ample and fast file storage and transfers. Grand Theft Auto V and Far Cry: New Dawn also saw the Legion 7i outclassing its competition at 1080p, although not by as wide of a margin. For instance, the Legion’s 1080p Grand Theft Auto V benchmark averaged 139 fps while the Alienware’s averaged 129 fps and the Asus’ averaged 111 fps. There’s also no keyboard flex on this unit, which is attributed to the metal chassis. This is another thing I didn’t care for with the Legion 5 Pro, that is fixed in the Legion 7i.
