This book was generally a popular one with the group – a beautiful and absorbing story, with an inspirational setting.On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 87 out of 100, based on 34 critics, indicating "universal acclaim". All About My Mother (Spanish: Todo sobre mi madre) is a 1999 comedy-drama film written and directed by Pedro Almodóvar, and starring Cecilia Roth, Marisa Paredes, Candela Peña, Antonia San Juan, Penélope Cruz and Rosa Maria Sardà. I thought it might be too dumbed down or sentimental for my taste but I absolutely adored it and I hugely recommend it. I loved Joanna Glen's first book so I was delighted to receive this ARC in exchange for an honest review and I certainly wasn't disappointed – such a talent!
She is often overwhelmed by a sense of "saudade", a Portuguese/Spanish word which has no English translation, but can be best described as "the presence of absence" a kind of nostalgia and deep, melancholic longing for something that has passed or possibly never even existed. The second part of the boy’s birthday treat was a visit to the play, which has special associations for Manuela, who as a teenager played Stella in an amateur production opposite the Stanley Kowalski of the man who became Esteban’s father. It's enticing and delicious, I found myself desecrating the book with my anotations, underlining, drawing boxes, circling words, you name it. With these new points of comparison, Eva begins to feel the differences and shortcomings in her family more keenly, perceiving an absence of love and shared history compared to the other children, especially her new best friend Bridget. A coming of age story following Eva as she grows up wondering about her 'real mother' and the encounters she has along the way that shape her view of what a mother is.
Llegar a la última página me dejó con un vacío gigante (de esos que se tienen cuando se termina algo muy bueno) y con muchísimas ganas de visitar Córdoba algún día.
The tone of All About My Mother has the heart-on-the-sleeve emotions of soap opera, but it is completely sincere and by no means camp". Even the women who are difficult and unpleasant are written in a way which allows us to understand them.
