About this deal

The success of Kake in the Wild West prompted the Tom of Finland Company to produce similar premium-format comic books for back issues of Kake that had reverted to Laaksonen's ownership. Laaksonen's drawings of bikers and leathermen capitalized on the leather and denim outfits which differentiated those men from mainstream culture and suggested they were untamed, physical, and self-empowered. David Kordansky Gallery is pleased topresentTom of Finland: 100 Years, celebrating the centennial of the artist's birth. By this time, however, Laaksonen was rendering private commissions, so more explicit work was produced but remained unpublished.

During these 18 years of publication, Kake, pronounced “kah-kee” (a Finnish nickname roughly linked to the English word ‘Butch’) revelled in his sexual adventures.A typical Kake comic is composed of a sequence of several full-page panels that feature little to no dialogue.

His favorite subjects were the rough manly men of his native Finland, as Touko knew from an early age that men interested him more than women.Laaksonen had a strained working relationship with DFT; he felt he was underpaid for Kake, and the company retained ownership of the original artwork for the series. Sheila Jeffreys offers a radical feminist critique of Laaksonen's work in her 2003 book Unpacking Queer Politics. Interior pages for the series were drawn as black line art drawings while covers were drawn as detailed pencil illustrations, a format chosen so as to be easily reproducible at a low cost. The post-World War II era saw the rise of the biker culture as rejecting "the reorganization and normalization of life after the war, with its conformist, settled lifestyle.

Hidden underground for hundreds of years, depictions of sex, love, and erotica in Andean pre-Columbian art are now proudly displayed in the Erotic. In spite of the depictions of rough sexual practices, there is something almost innocent and sweet about Tom of Finland’s drawings, like it’s all playacting. That company would expand into the nonprofit Tom of Finland Foundation, which to this day retains headquarters in an Echo Park Craftsman house and continues to be an important community hub. It’s funny to think that only a few years later Tom of Finland’s drawings appeared on national stamps and on bedsheets and cushion covers from the traditional Finnish textile company Finlayson, founded in 1820. Laaksonen was able to publish his more overtly homoerotic work and it changed the context with "new possibilities and conventions for displaying frontal male nudity in magazines and movies. As a longtime Angeleno and definitely someone who has been a part of a larger queer leather community here, I know how important Tom of Finland was in terms of brotherhood. When I was the artist in residence there, it says Tom of Finland, so you would expect a bunch of German dudes in leather, but it was a pretty diverse group of people. I agree with Richard Ellmann’s observations on Oscar Wilde, that life would repeat itself tediously were it not for the daemonic changes art forces upon it.

Laaksonen's artwork of this period compared to later works is considered more romantic and softer with "gentle-featured shapes and forms". Exhibitions, both virtual and in reopened spaces, have been staged or planned in locales as far-flung as Los Angeles, London, Tokyo, Paris, Berlin and Tallinn, Estonia. During his lifetime and beyond, Laaksonen's work has drawn both admiration and disdain from different quarters of the artistic community.

Featuring never-before-exhibiteddrawings in pencil and pen and ink, as well as Tom's personal collages, the show will remain on view throughTuesday, May 12, 2020, 8:00 am Pacific Time.
