About this deal

In this exciting title, eye-catching illustrations and engaging text combine to introduce the life and extinction of Giganotosaurus. Real Giganotosaurus were enormous meat-eating dinosaurs, closely related to Allosaurus, that were about 12 to 13 metres long and slightly larger than Tyrannosaurus rex (though less heavy and more lightly built). In the end, they still don't trust him (he does survive) and I thought that was a shame for the poor little dinosaur who was just trying to be a good lookout. The use of repetition will be a winner with the readers and I can imagine the story being recited loudly all over the house. When the actual Gigantosaurus does show up, Bonehead is nearly killed and the other dinos don't seem all too concerned about him based on his supposed lies.

And I was most happy to see in the back endpapers the disclaimer that Gigantosaurs had been made up for the story BUT that it is very similar to what once was a real dinosaur, the Giganotosaurus. In this dinosaur-themed retelling of "The Boy Who Cried Wolf," one little dino offers to watch for predators while his friends play. We got it from the library and out of the stack of books we checked out, this one always gets put on the top of the pile to read first. If you read my review all the way to the end, you can check out an alternate ending to this book that I just thought of: Instead of Bonehead getting "eaten", his friends get taken by the Gigantosaurus because they didn't believe him to run away. The majority of pages are undamaged with some creasing or tearing, and pencil underlining of text, but this is minimal. This is actually the name of a poorly described genus of sauropod from England, while Giganotosaurus is a carnivorous dinosaur from South America. Despite their large size, they can be quite stealthy and are skilled at developing poisons and weapons. Describes, in comic book format, the physical characteristics and behavior of the giganotosaurus, a meat-eating dinosaur of the Cretaceous period. It also provides information on dinosaurs and the acknowledgement that the Gigantosaurus was created just for the book.

Younger children will enjoy having this read to them, while the language used is more suitable for older children to read alone. Dougal Dixon has written more than 120 books, including many on dinosaurs, fossils, and Earth science subjects.I actually felt kind of bad for young Bonehead because unlike the wolf story where the child is being willfully untruthful, Bonehead simply mistakes other large animals for the Gigantosaurus.
