About this deal

Also heavily involved in the campaign to save the monument was OMD founder member Andy McCluskey. Andy told the ECHO: "The phone box was essentially the OMD office in the late 70s and early 80s as neither Paul nor myself had telephones in our parents' houses.

Thames Town, an imitation English town on the outskirts of Shanghai, includes red telephone boxes. [68] Lightfoot, Liz (6 November 2000). "Number's up for phone box sculpture". The Daily Telegraph. London . Retrieved 23 May 2019. The K6 has since become a British icon, but it was not universally loved at the start. The red colour caused particular local difficulties and there were many requests for less visible colours. The Post Office was forced into allowing a less strident grey with red glazing bars scheme for areas of natural and architectural beauty. [24] Ironically, some of these areas that have preserved their telephone boxes have now painted them red. The paint colour used most widely today is known as "currant red" and is defined by a British Standard, BS381C-Red539. [25] Kiosk installation: the early years [ edit ]

The K6, which was designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V's coronation in 1935, is largely identified as THE red telephone box. 60,000 examples of these were installed across Britain, which is why the K6 has come to represent what many regard as the typical red phone box.

Nick Sturgess, Head of Collections and Interpretation at Avoncroft Museum, takes us through their wonderful collection of K telephone boxes dating from the 1920s through to the 1980s

Thanks to Unicorn Restorations, though, t's clear to see that British people still have a great fondness for the old-fashioned phone box - just maybe not for their original, intended purpose. They petitioned the company for the box's return on the basis it had become an important monument to British electronic music. Due to the protestations of fans, the phone box was returned to its original spot two-months later.
