The more honored documentary like film, The Battle for Algiers by Gillo Pontecorvo is considered the last cinema word on the subject of the title and this film is often overlooked. Yet Lost Command has a lot to recommend it and it's a pity it doesn't get more acclaim than it does. From his breakout role as Zampanò in “La Strada” to his iconic portrayal of Auda Abu Tayi in “Lawrence of Arabia” and his award-winning performances in “Viva Zapata!” and “Lust for Life”, Quinn’s range and versatility as an actor were unparalleled. But fidelity was never Quinn’s strong point, and he also had three children by two other women, and affairs with, among others, the French actress Dominique Sanda and Pia Lindstrom, Ingrid Bergman’s daughter. Hired to protect a small mining town in Utah, gunslinger Clay Blaisedell (Henry Fonda) and his devoted follower, Tom Morgan (Anthony Quinn), partake in numerous liberties afforded by their position of power. While Blaisedell and Morgan match the violence of the outlaws they fight, the local inhabitants desire more peaceful resolutions to the crime problem. When reformed thug Johnny Gannon (Richard Widmark) takes the post of sheriff, he finds himself in competition with the town's hired guns.
