A considerable period lies between the writing of some of the enclosed poems, as perhaps you will be able to see. Whether time has shown any improvement I find it hard to say, as I have developed, intellectually at least, in the smug darkness of a provincial town, and have only on rare occasions shown any of my work to any critics, generally uninterested or incompetent. The premise is not entirely unreasonable, but whether it came from Neuburg or some other source in the narrow gossipy realm of England’s poetry community, perhaps Dylan Thomas, who liked to tell stories about Crowley, is unknown. If nothing else, Ezra Pound’s reaction suggests what an impact the death must have had on Neuburg who was, to all accounts, equally taken with Heyse.There are a number of models for their relationship and a few bear discussion. Certainly they had a declared Master/aspirant relationship, and also an informal relationship with Crowley as older poet and mentor. The dynamics between them run deeper and bear considerably more exploration than allowed here, however because this important aspect of their lives together has been so poorly understood we will add some commentary. Neuburg went on to fight in the First World War and by all accounts cut a ludicrous figure as a soldier. Afterwards, he lived in the picturesque Vine Cottage in Steyning, Sussex, where he set up the Vine Press. Using a handheld press, he produced several volumes of his own poetry: Lillygay(Vine Press, 1920), which included verse in Scottish dialect; Swift Wings(Vine Press, 1921), about subjects connected with Sussex; Songs of the Groves(Vine Press, 1922) and Larkspur(Vine Press, 1922), in which he occasionally broaches occult themes.He also printed the work of others, including Rupert Croft-Cooke’s Songs of a Sussex Tramp(Vine Press, 1922). The books were beautifully produced and employed a curious font with a wide W and linked double O. Neuburg was born in Steyning, Sussex, the son of Victor Benjamin Neuburg and his wife Kathleen Rose Goddard. His family gave him the means to set up a hand printing press at Vine Cottage in Steyling, and he married Kathleen Rose Goddard in 1921, though the couple would separate when he followed Runia Tharpe to London. The true circumstances are unclear though one source suggests that the marriage was a pragmatic match; Goddard wanted a child and marriage and openly took a lover not long after she gave birth. There they would live at Swiss Cottage and preside over a circle of poets. Crowley perceived his aspirations as religious—certainly his preoccupation at the time with the origin of evil and the nature of Satan suggested they might be—but from the outset there was also the issue of power and control. Magic, like mountaineering, was in some respects the perfect answer to the desire for "mastery" of the forces (secret or otherwise) of nature, and he now gave himself over to his magical studies. Pollitt was rapidly seen as inimical to these researches, and Crowley ended the relationship shortly after going down from Cambridge in the early summer of 1898. Crowley was later to recognize this as an "imbecile" mistake, and it remained a cause of permanent regret. The concept of Master/slave relationships was certainly not unknown at the time. Sacher-Masoch’s model, however, was Mistress/slave, which did not apply to Crowley and Neuburg. The culture of gay male Master/slave (M/s) which prevailed after the Second World War as recorded in Townsend’s “Run, Little Leather Boy” (1970) and “Leatherman’s Handbook” (1972) did not yet exist, though the English public school system can be considered through the understanding of BDSM as the “English Vice” to have had some influence on the Weimar era culture may have served in part as inspiration.He was Lecturer (later Senior Lecturer) [1] in the School of Librarianship North-Western Polytechnic/Polytechnic of North London.
