About this deal

XOXO follows Jenny who works in her uncle's karaoke booth where she meets Jaewoo, one of XOXO members. Maybe the universe really says that they meant to be, because three months later when Jenny moves to SOuth Korea and enrolls in elite arts academy where Jaewoo is also a student there. Their relationship grows despite the pressure from the press and Jaewoo's tight schedule. I mean... not exactly that. More like, you need to be strong for yourself first, be healthy and happy for yourself first, before you can be strong and give happiness to others. The healthier and happier you are, the more you can give to your fans, right? They should want that for you.” Skye Shin has heard it all. Fat girls shouldn’t dance. Wear bright colors. Shouldn’t call attention to themselves. But Skye dreams of joining the glittering world of K-Pop, and to do that, she’s about to break all the rules that society, the media, and even her own mother, have set for girls like her.

However, XOXO was still an incredibly fun read with wonderful girl power friendships and heartwarming family moments between daughter, mother, and grandmother. We also have an honest discussion of mental health and idol life in the Korean entertainment industry as well as carving out one’s identity in the country your family is from.

Jaewoo Is a K-Pop Star Who’s Forbidden to Date

XOXO is like watching those cute, lighthearted Korean dramas I stay tuned every night. I want more YA contemporaries similar to this book. 😭❤️ It's one of the books that you will surely fly through and just enjoy the story.

tw/cw: loss of a parent, hospital depictions (past + present), cancer mentions, cancer treatment depiction, bullying, brief mention of dieting, unwanted pictures being taken/paparazzi, stalking by the press/"fans", misogynistic comments/names, grief depictions. Get ready as Jessica Jung, K-pop legend and former lead singer of Korea’s most famous girl group, Girls’ Generation, takes us inside the luxe, hyper-color world of K-pop, where the stakes are high, but for one girl, the cost of success—and love—might be even higher. It’s time for the world to see: this is what it takes to SHINE.I love that this main character Jenny gets a chance to explore South Korea and visit family she hasn’t met before Simply put, this book made me happy. I guess you could say . . . I’m just a big fan.”— Emery Lord, author of The Map from Here to There
