About this deal

Various Halfpenny coins were minted in unsuccessful attempts to resolve this shortage. These included the minting of some tin Halfpenny coins. The tin coins also had the advantage of supporting the flagging Cornish tin mines. However, they corroded too easily and were soon withdrawn. There are also proof coins (list of U.S. Proof Sets with prices), of which almost 4 million were minted, but the rarest of this year’s pennies are undoubtedly the 1964 SMS penny as we will see below. List of most highly-priced 1964 penny errors

The top of the coin has the country name, also following the curve of the edge. Beneath it, written on the horizontal, is the Latin motto “E pluribus unum”. The words mean “From the many, one” and honor the creation of the USA from the individual states. Other Features of the 1964 Penny This type of coin is very abundant, with a mintage of over 6.4 billion coins. In addition, there are two mint marks for their manufacture, a typical factor that distinguishes American coins in price, so one must look at other differences to determine a higher or lower value. Satin finish: The surface of a 1964 SMS penny will have a matte-like finish, with less shine than a regular penny. This is due to a special sandblasting process used during production. Coins minted in Denver have a mint mark on the obverse too – a small “D” situated just below the date. The Reverse of the 1964 Penny The material of our penny in question consists of 95% copper and 5% Zinc, weighing a total of 3.11 grams for its 19 millimeters in diameter. If you think you have a rare 1964 penny, you should have it certified by a reputable 3rd-party coin gradings firm such as PCGS, NGC, ICG, or ANACS. Then, if you wish to sell it, offer it to a coin dealer who can pay you what it’s worth. Rare series: Cameo type editions, SMS coins and D variants These 1964-D Special Mint Set pennies are highly valued by collectors because they are the only circulating US pennies composed of 95% copper issued after 1837, and because of their limited production. These pennies can be distinguished from regular 1964 pennies by their sharp strikes, matte-like finishes, and distinctive toning.

The 1964 penny has the same dimensions and composition as most of the earlier Lincoln Wheat pennies. It measures precisely 19 millimeters across and weighs 3.11 grams. And it’s made of 95 per cent copper and 5 per cent zinc. Coin grading agencies take the color of copper coins into account when assessing and valuing them. Coins that are at least 95 per cent red across both faces are graded “red”. You may see the abbreviation “RD” in coin listings. It shows Lincoln’s head in profile facing e right. Brenner said he wanted to show Lincoln at his most engaging, and had imagined him reading to a child. All other things being equal, the most valuable copper coins are those graded red. Next in line are red and brown, with brown being the least valuable.

Further authorisation was granted to Bolton in 1799. This enabled him, in 1806 and 1807, to mint one Penny and two Penny coins with a changed design plus new Halfpence coins. Most 1964 pennies are worth only their face value. And even coins in uncirculated condition are likely to be worth only a few dollars. With coins as common as these, priority is given to the most special patinas, so a BN or RB may be undervalued, while an RD makes the coin more expensive because it is so rare in common coins. The 1964 penny has the image of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC on its reverse. If you look closely, you can see the statue of Lincoln in the middle of the portico. That makes this one of the few coins to have an image of the same person on both sides. A lso read: 13 Most Valuable Wheat Penny Worth Money 1964 Penny Value Guides 1964 (P) No Mint Mark Penny Value
