About this deal

For a drywall, an ideal moisture reading is between 5% and 12%. If it goes above 17% then the drywall may need to be replaced as this is a sign that it has experienced water damage. This is another popular wood moisture meter. It offers a wide and accurate measuring range of 5% to 50% for wood. It is lightweight and durable. It also only requires a single 9-volt battery although the battery does not come with the product. If for example we have a wall with some damp stains. They could be patchy and ill-defined. In the video Bryan mentions ‘profiling’ the wall so that we get a better idea of the distribution of the moisture in it. This is great because in general the higher readings will be nearer the source of the moisture and the lesser readings well, further away. This is basic but very useful as an aid. Visual evidence is important, but the meter may sometimes show that the source of moisture doesn’t follow the stain pattern – very useful. Profiling is done to obtain the distribution and then compare that to what the surveyor sees; the type of construction; location; topography and other factors. A diagnosis can then be reached and will normally be accurate if, the surveyor has used his skill, judgement and equipment correctly. He should know how to use a moisture meter properly. An all-in-one device might be used as a simpler alternative to switching between a pin and pinless device and is ideal for any of the surfaces which either a pin or pinless device are. Pros

This product includes a hold function. It also comes with an auto shut down feature. It has a 1.7-inch LCD display. This meter has a measuring range of 0% to 99.9%. It is powered by a single 9-volt battery which is not included. Pros Moisture meters are often used to identify issues and any structural damage that may have resulted from a build-up of moisture. Home and building inspectors will use moisture meter readings from home inspections to identify such problems. Non-professionals may also use moisture meters for DIY purposes. How Do You Use A Moisture Meter? The truth, however, most moisture meters only have one reading scale that only serves one material (usually wood). User Friendly, Easy to use - Moisture level indicated by numeric display, scale, and audio alerts signaling moisture above 20%, in building materials and 15% for wood. Ergonomic design provides great hand feeling.Repeat this process several times by measuring different areas of the same surface. Find the average reading from all of the measurements undertaken.

When used in ‘pin’ mode these meters work on conductivity. The inverse of this is resistance. You could say that both apply – the better the conductivity of a material the less the resistance to electrical flow. This is indicated on a meter with either an analogue gauge (old ones), lights or numbers (sometimes both). Some also emit beeps and squeaks too if the readings are deemed ”excessive’. In wood and masonry the primary modifier of their original conductivity is moisture. Thus the higher the flow of electricity across the pins – the more water is present (see exceptions in the video and below). How to use a moisture meter on Wood. This meter may be used to detect ambient temperatures. It’s small, ergonomic and easy to utilise. It has accurate measurements for two different wood groups and five groups of building materials. This device has an auto shut down feature which works following five minutes of inactivity. The top layers can be bone dry and show how values on the moisture meters but since concrete dries from the top to the bottom, deeper layers can be saturated yet still not detected by the instrument.

This type of moisture meter can be used to test surfaces which you want to avoid damaging since you won’t create holes in the material with this device as you would with a pinned meter. Pros

Moisture meters can allow you to evaluate the levels of moisture in a given spot and may allow you to spot signs of a leak. For this section, we will explain what a moisture meter is, what it does, what it’s used for and who would use a moisture meter. Its intelligent shut-off feature causes the device to turn off following five minutes without any activity. Other tech features include its 10 varying timber density grades and its calibration indication. This product comes with a large HD LCD screen. When used properly, electronic moisture meters are an essential tool for any surveyor involved in the diagnosis of damp and moisture related problems in buildings. On top of that, concrete can be mixed differently and as a result, have different densities and physical properties. This affects the moisture-holding capacity of the slab and what MC% is considered safe and acceptable.

Bryan explains how the meters work and shows you some moisture ‘profiling’, which is where moisture meters really shine. This means that they can be used as a very useful tool for any surveyor, who may be trying to gain an insight into the causes of dampness. These meters can be a liability if used incorrectly, so it is essential that surveyors understand the limitations of them. That way they remain a positive tool, rather than a misleading one. It’s surprising how many surveyors don’t know how to use a moisture meter properly. This applies to residential surveyors and even specialist damp surveyors too. Bryan has made it a priority to help train users to make good decisions based on meter reading, rather than bad ones. Perversly this may mean that with rising damp for example, the readings may fall with height initially and then get higher, as a wall is profiled, just at the threshold of the rise. The readings may then plummetas you leave the salt contaminated zone. This is know as a ‘salt band’ and is an indicator of a potential rising damp problem. A salt band can manifest for other reasons, but these are well recognised by competent surveyors. Leaks, severe floor/wall junction condensation, salt damp on the faces of chimney breasts and low level penetrating damp, for example. Measure Moisture Level, Spot Hidden Damage】AZUNO moisture meter is an invaluable tool for homeowners, woodworkers, floor installers, and inspectors. Trusted by both homeowners and professionals alike, moisture meters are relied upon to identify hidden problems, helping to prevent costly repairs. Generally speaking, moisture meters that are calibrated for wood offer a reading scale ranging from 6% to 40%. Does it mean that wood can not hold more moisture than 40%? No. As said earlier, wood has a great water-holding capacity and can have way more than 40% moisture content. Freshly cut wood, for example, can hold between 40% to 200% of damp in it. Quite impressive isn’t it?A moisture meter is a device used to measure the levels of moisture present in a building. They are often used to measure moisture levels in walls. Moisture meters can either work as conductivity meters or as capacitance meters. The best way to know if the values on a reference scale are normal or not is to compare them to a “normal” sample. As a result, we will tighten the perimeter a little bid and talk only about lumber, which is the type of wood most used for building houses and making furniture. For example, we know that “normal” for drywall is dry. So if you want to use a drywall reference scale, start by applying the moisture meter to drywall that you know for sure is dry. Record the reading you get and use this as a baseline.
