About this deal

Instead of using a light, in our homemade lava lamp, we used Alka-seltzer to assist in moving the molecules of the liquids the lamp. Why it made the cut: One device provides your trippy music and visuals thanks to a built-in speaker and a Bluetooth connection. The first option is to use baking soda and vinegar. Pour 1 cup of oil and 1/4 cup of of vinegar in your container. Drop the food colouring in. Mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda with 1 teaspoon of water and slowly pour it into the container. Why it made the cut: When the vibe is heating up, but you don’t want to wait for the light show to warm up, the JBL Pulse 5’s 360-degree app-controlled ambiance is available at the press of a button. It’s worth paying attention to how the companies add the color to the lamp. Some add dye directly to the wax and liquid, while others use neutral substances inside and paint the outside of the container. Those painted on the outside may lose a bit of their luster after regular cleanings, but they’ll look more vivid in the meantime. Extra features

It looks a bit like a trippy missile, but this 16-inch lamp’s size helps it make a statement in a room. Green wax floats around in blue-ish liquid, which gives it a very sci-fi vibe. We know it’s wax in there but if you wanted to pretend it’s some kind of alien ooze, you could likely do so while still moderately sober. Expanded frequency response thanks to an expanded acoustic chamber/passive radiator for the woofer and an added tweeter Baby oil is thinner than canola oil which means the bubbles move up and down faster in the baby oil so the “lava” effect wasn’t quite as good. We also noticed that the Alka-Seltzer fizzed up a little bit more in our lava lamps with baby oil, which sometimes made it harder to see the bubbles clearly. What container is best for a DIY lava lamp? The phrase “lava lamp” typically evokes an eclectic, psychedelic color pallet akin to what you’d find at that store in the mall that always smells like patchouli. That’s usually correct, but it’s not always the case. Some lava lamps embellish their look even more by adding glitter and other fun pollutants into the mixture to liven up the light show. Others tone it down a bit and give off more of an ’80s Art Deco vibe. None of them are particularly subtle, though, so if you’re looking for something to complement your Kanye-style all-white living quarters, maybe it’s time to get a regular lamp.We highly recommend using canola or vegetable oil in your lava lamp, but you can also use baby oil. Speaking of sonics, new design elements in this fifth iteration push even more air out from the upfiring 30W woofer, while a newly added 10W tweeter extends crisp treble to help balance the mid-lows. The Pulse 5 outputs a surprising bass volume for a compact Bluetooth party speaker, while maintaining clarity. Break the Alka-Seltzer tablet into small pieces about 5-8mm wide. If you drop in the whole tablet it gets so fizzy that you can't see clear bubbles. You can also make your lava lamp in a jar or bottle that has a lid. This will allow you to close it off and use the lava lamp again. Make sure the Alka-Seltzer has stopped bubbling before you put the lid on! How do you clean it up when you’re done? Why it made the cut: Make sure you get the big one if you want to make sure everyone who enters your house says, “Hey, is that a lava lamp?” Clean the globe of your lava lamp from time to time, using soft sponge and water. Make sure you unplug it at least two hours prior to cleaning. You can use your homemade lava lamp over and over until it stops reacting with the Alka-Seltzer. We dropped in at least 6 tablets into each of the lava lamps you see in the photos and they were still going strong. If you’d like to prolong the life of your lava lamp, here are some important facts and recommendations about using the device.

Luxurious with rich golden tones, this striking lava lamp by Blob Lamps moves away from the bright neon colour schemes of the classic lava lamp to create a modern classic with a more grown up feel. Bold with a metallic gold finish, this curved lava lamp has a large inner that contains white wax flowing inside yellow fluid, resulting a warming golden glow with constant, captivating motion. A flamboyant lava lamp, this golden lamp brings sunshine to your interiors, creating a soothing, calming atmosphere. Not to sound trite, but you must always read the instructions on your individual lamp. Generally, manufacturers recommend leaving them on for a maximum of eight hours. After that, they should be allowed to completely cool and resettle. Aside from anything else, this will undoubtedly prolong the life of your lamp.

The denser liquid sinks to the bottom, but the lava lamp light heats it up until it expands and becomes less dense, causing it to rise upward. As it gets farther from the light, it cools down, becoming denser again until it sinks; then the cycle starts all over. You can also make a lava lamp with salt. Fill your container 3/4 full of water, top it up with oil, and then scoop in tablespoons of salt at a time and watch the reaction make bubbles. What’s the science behind this homemade lava lamp?
